Old coins from the Civil War are highly valued and widely collected for several reasons. One reason is because they represent such an important time in the history of America. Where to Find an Unlikely Piggy Bank
Old homes in the northern and southern United States can sometimes be piggy banks old coins from the civil war. This is because of several events which took place during people started to hoard coins both in the north and south. Many people hid collections of coins inside their homes so they could not be easily accessed should their home be raided or taken over by the opposing side. They were also hid in homes so they could later be accessed for use after the war.
If you own a home which is an antebellum home or if your home was constructed during the time of the Civil War you may want to do a little investigating. Many people who stored coins during the Civil War forgot they had done so or had their homes taken from them before they had an opportunity to remove any hidden valuables. Many people have reported finding old coins from the Civil War in bedrooms or kitchens of these homes when walls and other items of the home where being removed during reconstruction efforts. You home could be a piggy bank of long ago forgotten coins.
Battle of Gettysburg Commemorative Coin
One of the coins which commemorates all of the soldiers who died in the war, both Union and Confederate, is named after the significant battle which was the beginning of the chain of events which led to the end of the war. This was the Battle of Gettysburg. In 1936 these coins were approved to be made for a celebration honoring the end of the Civil War. These old coins have values ranging from $200 to over $500 each depending upon the condition the coin is in.
It is important that anyone who is collecting Civil War old coins knows about these coins made after the war. This is because to this day there are no known proofs of the coin. This does not mean that they do not exist. It is likely that the proofs could turn up and if they do they will be worth far more than the coins which are currently being collected. Most Civil War coin collectors try to keep an eye out for these proofs while searching for older coins minted during the time of the Civil War.
