What Places to Avoid When Selling Coins

Having a great coin collection is something many people dream of. They imagine being able to enjoy the different coins that they have in their collection for the rest of their lives. If there is one constant in life, it is that things change. Your situation may change or you may just get tired of having the coins in your collection. You may also just want to cash in a few different pieces so that you will have the money to buy one really big piece which is being made available to you. That being said, there are a few things you should know when you decide to start selling coins.

One of the most important things to remember when selling coins is that where you sell your coins is extremely important. If you sell your coins to the wrong sources you will end up losing money on the deal. This is why you will need to follow this advice for what places to avoid. Avoid shops not associated with the ANA. Avoid selling to buyers who have a reputation for reselling improper grades on coins. You should also avoid selling your coins through an auction setting.

Shops with no ANA Association

The American Numismatics Association (ANA) is known around the world as having some of the highest standards when it comes to buying and selling coins. This is why you should avoid any shop without any association with the ANA. They are likely to engage in activities which will include telling you that your coin is worth less than it is worth. Those who are inexperienced will take their word for it since this is their profession. They are really just looking to steal from you and should not be trusted.

Buyers with no Ethics

When selling coins, you should avoid buyers who lack ethics. Observe how they interact with other people. If they regularly deny that people have a coin which is worth anything of value, they will do the same to you. All they are really looking to do is swindle people into agreeing to sell their coins for less than they are really worth. They will then take the coins and sell them for a huge profit. If your coin had been properly graded, you want to sell it to someone who will not take the same coin to a basement slabber to get an artificially high price on the coin they paid you next to nothing for.

Selling at Auction

While buying coins at an auction is a great way for to save a lot of money on your coins, it is not a great way to make money when selling coins. Those looking to buy are looking to buy for less than what the market will offer. If you cannot find a buyer, just hold strong. You are sure to find someone who will buy your coins at the right price sooner or later and you will know that they will not act unethically once they get them.
