Looking at a good coin collection is a thing of beauty. All of the coins will be properly graded and slabbed from one of the reputable third party graders. You will see coins of varying levels of grades and rarity. You will also see that there is a person who is very happy with the collection that they have and wants very much to make sure that they have a collection which will stay valuable for years to come. To make sure that the rare coin value does not decrease in value, it is a good idea to get to know the different things which can harm the value.
There are a few different things which can cause a coin to go from being worth hundreds of thousands to having a rare coin value of less than $100. The first thing which can happen to a coin is that the person handling it does not know how to properly handle their coins. Another thing which can happen is an overzealous collector will try to clean their coins in the wrong way. Another way still is that a coin will be put into the wrong kind of casing.
Improper Handling
One thing which will decrease a rare coin value faster than anything else is being handled incorrectly. The proper way to hold a coin is with clean white cotton gloves. This is because your hands have volatile oils which will eat away at the finish and at the coin itself. Having the layer of cotton in between you and the coin will prevent any damage. Even with the gloves on, it is only proper to hold the coin by the side. This is because holding the coin where you are touching the obverse (head) or the reverse (tail) will have a negative effect on the relief.
Improper Cleaning
Most collectors will tell you not to clean your coins at all. Some will tell you that cleaning your coins will increase the rare coin value. No matter which side of this you stand on, one thing is for certain. If you clean your coins with a toothbrush, acid or any kind of acidic cleaner you will simply be scraping or eating away at the top layer of the coin. This will decrease the value significantly. Make sure that if you do clean your coins that you are following prescribed methods.
Improper Casing
There have been some cases which people have used to protect the rare coin value and unintentionally caused the value to go down. This is because they used the wrong kind of casing. Coin cases which contain PVC or any other kind of rough material which will scrape or bang up your coin is not something you want your coin to be in. In fact, the only thing your coin should really be store in is a ANA approved slab. This will make it far more likely that your coin will stay preserved at the grade which is marked on the slab.
