These are coins which are not meant to be used as currency but are intended to be used as ways that people can be honored. These coins can also be used to commemorate events and movements. The limited nature of the coins makes them instantly valuable not only to the people who they are given to or purchase them. They are given value to those who collect these kinds of coins.
There are a few ways in which custom coins can go from simply being interesting to being valuable. These are not standards which are based solely on the individual. In fact, they are based on standards which can be measured by professionals and individual collectors. One of the biggest ways that custom coins will go up in value is if they were intended to only be given to a select number of people. This can be because of accomplishments or because of attending a certain event. These coins are not readily worth anything other than to those who attended the event. Events which are noteworthy or positions which have significance in history will cause the coins which were made for them to be of very high value to collectors. This is because you will have to go through a lot to be able to pry the coins from those who they belong to.

There are some coins which are created which are created simply to be a work of art. These custom coins are instantly more valuable than just the metal which the coin is made out of. Any of the coins which are kept in an inert plastic container or behind glass will be able to preserve the value of the coin so that it will be able to increase in value. The reason why these are so valuable is because outside of the U.S. Mint, there are not many coins produced which are stunning to look at.
Coins Made from Rare Metals
There are many custom coins which are created by using silver or gold. Often there are coins which are created with a combination of both the metals. Even if these coins never gain a value all of their own, they will be able to retain the value of the metal from which they were struck. This will allow you to sell the coins at least the metal market rate if you ever decide to get rid of them. Because of the rare usage of valuable metals, it is likely that these coins will increase in value quickly.
