The World of Foreign Currency Collecting

There are plenty of different options available for those who are looking into trading and collecting foreign currency. Both old and new forms of currency from foreign lands can provide great pieces for incredible collections.

If you are thinking about coin collection and collecting paper currency from foreign lands you need to think about your options. You need to focus on the start of your collection and work your way on from there. Understanding the world of foreign currency collecting will help you to get the best start on your new collection.

Foreign Coins

Foreign currency collectors will find plenty of different coins available to them. Many European countries turn to coins for what would be the equivalent of the $1 Bill and $2 Bill in the United States, with some taking it as far as the equivalent of the $5 bill. These different currencies work to keep coins in use because of how convenient and cost effective they can be. Different countries use plenty of coins, which are often larger than coins found in the US.

Foreign Bills

There is more to foreign currency than coin collection – paper currency is just as exciting, if not more exciting, than coin currency. Foreign bills are often flashier and more interesting than bills in the United States, and have been for years. Older bills are collectible and generally feature strong colors, bold prints, interesting photographs, and holograms.

How the Euro Changed Foreign Currency Collecting Forever

The foreign currency collecting market has been completely changed by the advent of the Euro. The European Union introduced the Euro in 2002, a single currency that created defunct currencies in many countries. This created a wealth of collecting opportunities, as these foreign currencies were no longer minted. These currencies included the Italian Lira, the French Franc, the German Mark, the Austrian Schilling, the Greek Drachma, and the Spanish Peseta. Other countries that also gave up their currency include Belgium, The Netherlands, Ireland, Slovakia, Malta, Estonia, Cyprus, Slovenia, The Vatican, Portugal, Luxembourg, and Finland.

The advent of the Euro has completely changed collecting in the sense that it has ended much of the interesting currency differentiation in greater Europe. While this has created great collection opportunities with those ill-fated currencies, it has created some issues. There will be less currencies in the future, which will drastically reduce the foreign currency collections of the future. These collections will have less types of currency to pull from because of the large amount of countries who have switched to the Euro.

Foreign currency trading has gone through some exciting changes over the last ten years, creating an entirely new market for coin collection and paper currency collection. Anyone who is serious about collecting foreign currency will want to make sure that they understand both past and present currencies. Those who have a serious grasp on the history and future of foreign currency will be those who have the best collections.
