Coins have been considered one of the main forms of currency around the world for a considerable amount of years. These items of payment can be found made of various types of alloys with gold and silver being primary selections by most mints. Usually, more often than not, you will find that most coins be stamped accordingly with a symbol representing something significant to the country of origin. Outside of any symbols, writing and amounts will be made on the coin as well to provide a notation regarding how much the piece is worth. Here are a few steps as to how a coin is minted in the United States:
- A metal strip, usually as stated above in either gold or silver premise, is put through a blanking press. This device is what sets the stage in the coin creation process. The metal strips are modified by cutting out the circular shapes most often recognized as coins from the strip itself.
- The coins are then placed within an annealing furnace. This type of furnace is used primarily due to the fact that it heats the metal at various degrees of temperature. These varying heat stages allows for the metal to harden and present an immense durability when release to the general public. Once the heating process is complete, the coins are then run through a complete rinse and thoroughly inspected for a smooth surface with no defects.
- An upsetting mill is then used to create the well known edges usually found on the sides of a coin. This process raises the rim of the smooth surface to further along the strengthening process of the coin as well as provide a border for the design press. Various forms of upsetting mills are available to create edges that are either ridged or smooth as the coin itself.
- Once the coins have been filtered through the upsetting mill, there are then brought to the coining press. This press is entitled with the job of embedding the image on to the coin itself. Once the image has been struck onto the coin, the writing as well as any dollar denominations is embossed on to the coin. Usually, with most coining presses, both sides of the coins are done at the same time to avoid any mistakes being made during the process.
- The next and final process is done by either a coin sizer or an assembly line of workers. This process of screening is done to make sure that all coins being made are done to the specifications of the country’s particular mint. All coins that are found to have blemishes, shapes not in line with others or incorrect stamping are thrown into a batch that will be melted down and put through the process again. All other successful coins that pass inspection are then rolled accordingly and filtered into circulation through banks and financial institutions once distributed.
