Interesting Facts about 3 Rare Irish Coins

All countries have been using coin and paper currency for several years. In every country there are coins which have become collector’s items for several different reasons. Some of the collector’s coins are worth very high values because they have special stories or features associate with them. Others are highly values because they are rare and very hard to come by. Below is some information about 3 rare Irish coins which are currently very sought after.

1938 Penny

On 1938 an Irish mint made two proofs of this penny. The proofs were made to see of if the dies worked for a design modification which was made to the penny. Only two proofs were ever made with the new design which bears the year 1938 and this is why these pennies are so rare and tip the list of rare Irish coins.

One of these bronze rare Irish coins is on display at the National Museum of Ireland. The other 1938 penny was sold at an auction at Spink’s for an amount which totaled almost $50,000. This bronze penny has a hen with two chicks behind her on the obverse. On the reverse side of this coin there is a harp printed in to the coin.

1943 Florin

In 1943 the price of silver had gone up considerably due to the war. Because of this 1943 was the last year that silver coins were minted and put into distribution Ireland. Any silver coins which had already been minted and had not been distributed at the time the decision not to use silver was made were to be destroyed and used for other purposes by the Irish government.

Although the government had declared that silver coins were no longer to be used several bags of silver Florins made it into circulation. As of today Florins of any grade are part of the category of rare Irish coins. There are only four known Florins in good condition.   The obverse of this coin has a fish printed in it and the reverse has a harp printed on it.

1943 Half Crown

Another of the rare Irish coins which became so sue the change in the Irish government’s policy to no longer use silver coins. In 1943 there were silver Half Crown which has already been minted and were to be turned back to the government same as the Florin coins were to have been. Just as bags of the Florin coins had made it into circulation despite the ruling, these coins too somehow made it into circulation.

When these coins are found in good condition they can get over $1,000 each at auction. There is a horse on the obverse of this coin. The reverse of the coin has a harp printed on it. It is thought that these coins will keep increasing in value over time. It is still possible for these coins to be found which were in some way misplaced while they were in circulation in Ireland.
