The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle

Augustus Saint-Gaudens is a sculptor who was commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt to create a more beautiful national currency. The Double Eagle he created is considered by many in the coin collecting to be one of the most beautiful coins created. Scandal surrounds the coin as well when in 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order to take America off of the gold standard. McCann, a worker at the mint, decided that he needed to have about 20 of the coins and made a switch. This has helped to make the 1933 Double Eagle the most elusive coin.

Indian Head Eagle

The 1907 Indian Head Eagle is another one of the creations of Saint-Gaudens. While it is not nearly as collectible, it is still considered to be a beautiful coin. The 1907 gold coins are valued at a far greater level because of the difference in the relief of the coin. One thing is for sure: you will not be able to get this at the $10 level that it was originally intended to be circulated at.
