Each coin tells a story which makes collecting them great for anyone who is a history buff. Collecting coins can also be ideal for those looking for a hobby where they have the opportunity to obtain a return on their investment. This is because several coins, especially the ones which are rare, can be very valuable and many increase in value as time goes by. Below is some of the information you need on order to get begin you own rare coin collection.
It is all in the Details
When you are collecting rares coins their condition is one of the key factors used to determine their value. Other factors such as small details of the coin from what is printed on a coin to any imperfections the coin obtained in the minting process can also determine their value. In order to have the ability to examine all of these details you need to first have an eye for detail. You also need to have an industry standard 10 power loop magnifying glass. A 10X loop make it possible to see all of the small details on a coin clearly. This can help you determine whether or not you want to purchase a coin and it can help you to determine the value of the coins you have in your collection.
Gloves and Coin Handling
Another key item you need to have in place to start collecting rare coins is a pair of white cotton gloves. These gloves will give you the ability to touch and examine “raw” coins which are those that have not been encase on a seal such as a sonic seal by a grading service. The gloves prevent things which can destroy a coin such as the oil from your hands and other debris from coming in contact with a raw coin. Do remember that although you may be wearing a pair of white cotton gloves you will still need to handle you coins by only touching the edges of the coin. This reduces the risk of damage and wear to a coin.
Flipping Out
If you will be collecting raw rare coins you will need to invest in what is referred to as flips. These are clear thin cases which can have a raw coin inserted into them. The flop keeps the coin from coming into contact with anything which could damage it. Be careful though when purchasing flips. Make sure the flips you purchase do not contain PVC. In years past flips with PVC were thought to assist in the protection of coins. Later it was revealed that the PVC in those flip actually caused damage to the rare coins which were kept inside of them. While most manufactures of coin flips do not use PVC there are still some out that do, so always ask before you make a purchase of flips.
