The prospect of shipping coins is a stressful one; not only do you have the worry that the package could be damaged during transit, but it may not arrive at the destination at all. For other, less valuable items, the it might not be such a huge deal, but when it comes to collectible coins, the loss could be a disaster on both ends. If you want to prevent this from happening, the below tips are recommended. With time and experience, these tips could easily become second nature.
1. In learning how to ship coins, perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind is the fact that the coins should not make any noise. In other words, the coins should not be allowed to move around during transit, making sounds that the carriers can hear. If a person should hear them, and figure out that there is money inside that box, they will break into it, stealing the contents. To prevent this, use a lot of padding, such as paper and foam peanuts, so that there is little room to move around. Try to press the coins against two hard surfaces such as cardboard if possible. If nothing else, it may be able to muffle the jingling, and the odds are greater that the package will be left alone.
2. Going along with the above tip, make sure to also take great care with the coins. The receiver would not appreciate coins that have been scratched and damaged from the shipping process; you are very likely to be blamed for the situation, and if you were selling them, a refund might be in the future. Treat them as fragile items, not plastic toys that could be repurchased at any local store.
3. Once you have finished packing the coins, remember that it is vital that you add some kind of tracking number into the mix. This can be done at the post office, as long as it is requested. When this is done, both you and the person on the receiving end will be able to keep track of where the package is. Should something happen to it, you will have some idea of where it is. In addition, people will be unable to blame you for the package becoming lost; after all, the tracking would show that it was sent.
Shipping coins may feel like something that is nearly impossible to do correctly, but you can once you learn the ropes. Treat them as valuables, and never make it obvious what is inside the package as it goes through transit. Make sure that the buyer or whoever it might be is satisfied, and should the coins become lost, it would be difficult to pin the blame on you. Collecting coins is a fun and enriching experience; try not to turn it into something that only lands you a headache at the end of the day.
