How to Find the Custom Coins You Want to Collect

There are many different kinds of coins numismatists will collect. While the majority of the coins collected will be legal tender, there are those who enjoy collecting custom coins. These can be coins which were created in honor of a legal tender or they can be a coin which was used to mark a specific event in history. No matter why the coin was created, the value of the coin will depend largely on its availability and the willingness of others to collect the coin.

There are a few different places where it is likely you will be able to find the custom coins you want to collect. Some locations are better than others to find the coins you want to collect. By getting to know the different locations, you will be able to evaluate your ability to find what you want there and to be able to buy the coins at the price you want to purchase them for. One of the best places to find the coins is directly from those who have created the coins. You can also purchase them through coin shows. The hardest, yet still possible place to buy these coins is at coin auctions.

Buying from the mint

The companies which create custom coins might have mint in the name, but they are in no way attached or licensed by the US Mint. This is important because you will not be collecting legal US tender no matter what images might be on the coins themselves. Often if you are able to buy directly from the mint you will be able to get the coin already in protecting casing along with other information about the coin. Keeping everything in its original state will increase the value that the coin will have in the future.

Buying from coin shows

One great place to buy custom coins after they have been created is through the coin shows. This is because most anyone can bring their coin collection to sell to other coin collectors. Since there is a thriving population of custom coin collectors out there, it is likely you will find someone looking to sell the coins you are looking to buy. This is your opportunity to talk with others with the same interest and to buy the coins you are missing from your collection.

Buying from coin auctions

One of the hardest places to buy custom coins from is at the coin auction. This is because the auctions are mainly just for coins which can be considered legal tender. It is possible for the custom variety to get slipped in on occasion. Show up early and look at everything available. This will help you to decide whether you want to come back for the actual live auction or not. These auctions tend to sell the custom coins pretty cheap if they are there because of limited number of people looking to buy the coins.
