Good Coins to Start Your Coin Collection

One of the things that make coin collecting so incredibly interesting is the sheer wealth of different coins that you can add to your coin collection. Currencies from around the world provide thousands of different types of coins that can be collected.

It can be difficult to find the coins that are going to help you to get your collection off to a good start. There are simply some different coins that are perfect for a starter collection – low cost but high future value, emotional value, and historical value. These are some o f the coins that you are going to want to focus on as you work to start your coin collection.

Wheat Pennies

Some of the best coins to start with are the coins that are not created or minted anymore but are still somewhat readily available. Wheat pennies are pennies from the United States that featured an image of wheat on the back. While these coins are a little rare, they are still circulated today – while the back is different, the front remains the same, making it easy for people to miss them. Simply take a look at all of the different pennies that you find whenever you exchange money and look for these pennies. If you cannot find them, feel free to head to a collector shop and purchase one, as they are still relatively cheap to collect.

Nickels and Dimes

There are plenty of different nickels and dimes in old US currency that are perfect for coin collecting, with each offering a unique look at history. People constantly look toward the beauty of Mercury Dimes and the elegance of buffalo Nickels for their collection. These different pieces can still be found relatively easily, but are far more expensive than their initial value of five cents and ten cents. These pieces do not circulate in currency anymore, as they are too rare and people have generally found them and held on to them. These pieces are easy to find in coin collector shops, however, making them a good choice for new coin collectors.

Current Collections

If you are starting your coin collection why not start with the current collections of coins in the United States? The recent quarters that featured all of the different states, as well as the dollar coins that feature all of the US presidents, are perfect coin collecting opportunities.  You can still find these in circulation and will find them at face value, rather than paying an upcharge for a rare coin.

There are plenty of different coins, both old and new, that you can start your collection off with. Take the time to think about all of the different coins that you could be using for your collection and think about your attraction to them. Find the coins that you are most interested in and try to find them for your collection. You will be sure to start your collection off strong and continue on with your coin collecting interest for years to come.
