People have been collecting American coins ever since the Republic was established. The reasons for collecting the coins have changed over the years. One thing which has not changed is that the rarer a coin is, the more it will be worth in the long run. This is important to note because there are a few rare American coins which is you own them, you can have the ability to make millions off of what you have. The more you know about the top 3 rare American coins, the more prepared you will be when looking to buy or sell the different coins.
While there are some of these rare American coins you will be able to purchase, there is one you will likely never be able to purchase. The rare nature of the coins is only rivaled by the beauty which has been captured in each of the different coins. The rarest coins in America right now are the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, the 1804 Draped Bust Dollar and the Brasher Doubloon. These coins are extremely valuable not only because of the rare nature of the coins but also because of the part they played in the history of the country.
1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
In 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order taking America off of the gold standard. To drive the point home, the mint ordered the collection of all gold coins to turn them into bullion bricks. The Double Eagle for the year has already been struck when the order was passed. The government tried to collect the coins before distribution to melt them down, but 20 were stolen to make them one of the rare American coins and one of the only coins it is illegal to own.
1804 Draped Bust Dollar
The 1804 draped bust dollar was not even minted in 1804. This added to the value of the rare American coins right off the bat. The fact there was only eight produced, drove the value of the coins even higher. In fact, the last coin to be produced with the draped bust as a silver dollar was coined in 1803. The ones stamped with 1804 were only created to give away to Asian leaders as a thank you for continued trade with the U.S. These coins are worth over $1 million each.
Brasher Doubloon
In the years previous to states being added to the Republic, they were allowed to have their own form of currency. The majority of these currencies were in bronze like that of the state of New York. Ephraim Brasher decided to create a few decorative gold coins from the same press which he used to make the copper ones and the few which remain today are among the rare American coins most sought after by collectors. Being able to own the doubloon is like owning a piece of American history which is restricted in nature.
