Coin Collecting in Antique Stores

When people think of coin collecting and where they are going to purchase the coins that they want for that collection, they fail to think about antique stores. While some antique stores are not going to carry coins, others love the history of the older coins and want them in their stores.

There are certain tips and tricks that you are going to want to take into consideration as you work to collect coins in antique stores. If you follow these tips you will be able to fill out your coin collection with many of the coins that you are interested in.

Negotiation

Antique dealers are used to negotiations, even more so than coin shop dealers. You must be prepared to work on negotiating the price of a coin down for your coin collection. The prices that are placed on the coins that you are going to find in the antique shops are almost guaranteed to be too high. If you fail to negotiate down, you will be paying far too much for the same coins that you could find elsewhere. If you work on negotiation, you can easily get the coins that you want for some of the lowest prices that you will find.

Avoid Antique Malls

If you are willing to pay full price for the coins that you are interested in, you can head to antique malls. If you ado not want to pay full price, you should skip these areas altogether. Antique malls feature multiple lots that come from different dealers in the area. These dealers are not present, making it difficult (if not impossible) to work the price down on anything that you find. This is why you should simply head for one-owner antique areas rather than different types of antique malls.

Check for Counterfeits

If you are heading to an antique store to find coins you want to do heavy research on counterfeits. You should be able to tell the difference between the real coins and fake coins, as many antique dealers cannot. Unlike coin shops, they are not well versed in counterfeits. You could easily end up purchasing a counterfeit coin if you do not do your research beforehand. If you find a coin that you like but are unsure of, as far as counterfeits are concerned, ask them to hold the coin for 24 hours. This will give you enough time to research the coin and figure out whether or not it is real.

It is going to be harder for you to work on coin collecting when you only look at antique stores. With that being said, it is important for you to look at antique stores just as you would look at other coin collection shops and locations. There are some antique stores and dealers who are obsessed with history and include the history of coins in their lots. You may be able to find great prices for the different coins that you are looking for when you browse around antique stores in your area.
