How to Properly Display Old Coins

If you have taken the time to hunt down and purchase old coins, you should try to display your coins. The display is going to give you a strong sense of self pride and is going to give others a glimpse into one of the most important aspects of your life.

There are a couple of things that you will want to consider, and do, as you work to display your old coins. These tips will help you to better understand how to display old money so that you, and those around you, can enjoy the fruit of your labors.

Clean Them Well

The first thing that you need to do to your collection is clean it. You want your old money and old coins to stand out as much as possible. You want them to shine, and you want them to show off as much of their detail as you possibly can.

There will be different cleaning instructions for different types of old coins. You need to look into each coin and the material of each coin to be able to clean it without damaging it.

Provide Clear Classification

Anyone who is looking at your collection of old coins wants to do more than simply look at your collection. They want to know the history behind the pieces and what the names of each of these coins are. Take the time to provide clear classification of each coin for your collection. Those who view your coins will appreciate it and will have a better understanding of the complexity of your collection.

Avoid Harsh Light

While old coins are the heartier type of old money, they can still be susceptible to issues like harsh light. Try to move your coins out of severe direct light in an effort to keep them as safe as possible. The more that you can do to protect the integrity of the coin, the better it will age.

Stop Movement

If you are trying to display your coins you need to make sure that they are protected from, of all things, each other. Your coins cannot move around in the case, even if the case is bumped or slightly tilted. When coins run into each other, they can call small scratches and gins. Make sure your coins are secure in your case when you display them.

These different tips are going to give you the tools that you need to correctly display your old coins. It will help you to show off their beauty and their rarity without compromising the coin itself. you will be able to keep your most important coins safe and sound while showing others the coins that you have collected.

If you have a coin collection of old coins, do not hide it away in a box or in a location where no one can see it. Work on a careful display to show the world the beauty of the old money that you collect.

The Pros and Cons of the Coin Collection Album

There are many different ways you can save your coins that you collect. There are some methods which are better than others for protecting your coins. One of the ways you can protect your coins is through the use of the coin collection album. This is an album which some coin collectors use so that they will be able to look at certain collections at any given time. While these are generally used to collect the modern coins being issued by the mint, there are many which have been created which help you to store older coins as well.

It is important that before getting started with using a coin collection album that you know all there is to know about it. You should know all of the good qualities about putting your valuable coins in such a place. You should also get to know what cons there are about using an album to store your coins in. Additionally, it is a good idea to get to know the other ways you can store your coins. The more you know about the different ways to store your coins, the better decisions you can make about how you would like to store your coins.

Pros of the album

The first thing you should look at when considering whether to use a coin collection album is all the ways you will benefit from it. The biggest way you will benefit from it is the fact the album will have been made specifically to house your coins. The slots for each coin have been specially designed so that when you put the coin in the album, it will stay exactly where you put it. This will keep you or anyone else from touching the coin again.

Cons of the album

The biggest problem with the coin collection album lies in the construction. They are generally made from cardboard. This means the coin can be scratched when you place it into the album. Additionally, when you place the coin into the slot, you will likely do so with your bare hand. This will render the coin unable to be graded as a mint state coin. The oils from your skin will make it where the coin will have an indelible mark which will rate it at lower than a MS 61.

Alternatives to the Album

If you have decided you do not want to use the coin collection album, you will need to have an alternative to put your coins into. This is because you will need to offer protection to your coins. A great way you will be able to get protection for your coins is to use flips, cases and slabs. The most used for of protection is the slab. This is because the hard plastic shell will suspend the coin in place and will allow you to inspect the coin without ever having to take it out of the case.

3 Ways to Preserve Collectable Coin Value

There are more people than ever getting started with coin collecting. While not everyone is getting into coin collecting so that they can make money, it is always a good idea to preserve the collectable coin value. This is important not only because you will be able to sell your coins at the price you bought them for or better. You will also be able to sell the coins to other collectors than far more than you bought them for. This will allow you to build your collection and be able to buy even more valuable pieces.

There are three ways which are imperative if you are looking to preserve your collectable coin value. If you follow these steps it will not only make it where your coins will be protected from harm, it will make it easier to be able to sell your coins when you want to. This is important because you will be able to make sure the coins you have in your collection will be enjoyed by other collectors just as much as you enjoyed having the coins in your collection.

Good coin grading service

One of the most important things you can do is to have your coins graded. This is a process most people who collect coins already know about. The problem is if you get your coin graded by a service which is lesser known or is known for being shady, you will have a much harder time selling your coins when you are ready to. This is because people will see the shady company name on the slab and they will not trust the grade which has been used. They will also think that you are trying to be shady by getting more money than what your coin is worth.

Never touching with bare hands

It is highly important that even if you have all of your coins graded and in a slab that you have a good pair of white cotton gloves. These are important to maintain the collectable coin value because you will not ever touch the coins with the hands. This will help to protect from the obverse or reverse from becoming smudged with finger oil or worn from being touched too often. You will also be able to maintain the mint state grade is your coin has one.

Never clean collectable coins

One of the biggest things which new coin collectors do not seem to get is that cleaning coins ruins the collectable coin value. This is because a big part about numismatics is making sure that the coin is a part of the history it represents. What is worse, when you wash coins incorrectly, you will actually damage the coin even more. This will drop the value and make your coin something you will not want to show any other collectors. They will know what happened to the coin and you will look silly for doing something you were not supposed to.

Must Have Supplies for Collecting Paper Money Currency

Collecting is a great way to pass the time no matter what it is that you are interested in. If you are into history at all, there are hobbies like paper money collecting which will allow you to do something which is both fun and potentially profitable. Of course, in order to do something which will be profitable, you will have to know what you are doing. One of the hardest ways to collect is when you have chosen to collect paper money currency.

Paper money currency does not hold up to the test of time nearly as well as coins do. This makes it where it is more difficult to find the paper money that you are looking to collect. Of course, whenever you are able to find the items that you are looking to keep, it is likely that they will have an even higher value than you will be able to find in the coins that others collect. If you are looking to get started, you will need to have the right supplies as well as making sure that you know how to handle the currency.

Supplies Needed to Start Collecting

Other than the paper money currency itself, there are a few things that you will need in order to get started with your collection. Make sure that you are first and foremost buying plastic sleeves that you will be able to put new bills into. The best kinds that you will be able to buy are those which will seal on their own as soon as you close them. You will also need to have some plastic tipped tweezers that you can use to handle the money with. Additionally, you will need to have tight-woven lint-free gloves that you can wear whenever handling the money.

Best Places to Buy Supplies

There are many different places to buy the supplies that you need for collecting paper money currency. The best places that you will be able to buy from are those which are designed just for currency collectors. They will have the supplies which are actually designed to be used in the manner that you are using them. Look for coin and paper money collecting shops in your area as well as online to find all of the supplies that you will need. You might also be able to find a few items to add to your collection while you are there.

Basic Handling Instructions

Once you have all of your supplies and you are buying new pieces for your collection, it is important to make sure that you are handling them correctly. Never attempt to clean an item in any way as you might damage it or leave marks. Additionally, you should never touch anything with your bare hands. Always wear your gloves even when you are using the tweezers that you have purchased. The oils from your hands will soil the paper and will leave marks.

Taking Care of Your Coin Collection

There are plenty of different people who jump into the world of having a coin collection without thinking beyond the actual acquisition of the coins themselves. They fail to think about their collection after they acquire their various coins. They will not think about the different factors that can affect value and the care that they must take with their coins.

There are various things that you will want to consider as you work to take care of your coin collection. Those who take the time to make sure that they care for their collections correctly will see their collections last for years to come.

Stabilize the Coins

One of the first things that you are going to want to do with your collection is to stabilize it. You want to make sure that the different pieces in your collection are not moving around. You may want to consider separate cases for each of the different coins you own. Your coin collection needs to be safe and secure to ensure that the value of all of the different pieces you own retain their value. Coins that are allowed to move freely may wear down or incur slight damage, which will automatically lower their value.

Clean the Coins Carefully

Most people are going to want to clean the coins that they own to ensure that they look their best. No one wants to have a collection that looks grimy and dirty – it is simply not visually appealing. Take the tie to carefully wash the coin in simple solutions that feature no chemicals whatsoever. You do not want to risk the value of the coin by using a chemical on the metal. If the chemical and the metal react, you may ruin the coin that you have worked so hard to add to your collection.

Taking Care of Dust and Debris

While you do not need to wash coins regularly you are going to want to dust off your coin collection regularly. While small amounts of dust are not going to cause any problems to your coins, they will look less-than-stellar and lose their visual appeal. Take the time to care for your collection by dusting it off on a somewhat regular basis. This gives you a reason not look at your collection regularly, looking at each coin and thinking about why it is in your collection.

There are various ways to take care of your coin collection and various reasons for you to do so. Those who want to keep their collection to pass down to newer generations will want the coins to stay in pristine condition. Those who are looking to sell their coins will also want the coins to stay in mint condition – the values are highest when the coin is in mint condition. Take the time to care for your collection to ensure that, no matter the future of your collection, the coins will last and look their best.

3 Reasons to Choose a Slab Over a Coin Album

There are coin collectors of all ages. There are also coin collectors of all degrees. A lot of what kind of a collector you are will depend on how much money you have to invest in such things. Another factor will depend on how long you have been collecting for. This is because many of the coins which are not valuable now might be worth a decent amount in about ten years. The amount the coins will be worth depend on how you store them. This is why many choose not to use a coin album to store coins in.

If you are looking to get started with or expend your coin collection you will have to make choices regarding where you will store your coins. Most of the industry will advise against using a coin album. They will advise you to use a coin slab instead. There are a few different reasons for this. First, the coin will be handled less. Second the coin will incur less wear. Last, you will be able to see all sides of the coin without having to pry it out of the album.

Handling the coin less

One big no-no in coin collecting is touching coins with your bare hands. This is something which is just about unavoidable when you have a coin album. This is because there is no protection stopping your hands from touching the coins. This means the oils from your hands will instantly turn what could have been a mint state coin into an almost uncirculated coin even though it never actually saw any circulation through the hands of the public. Your hands alone are enough to cause this kind of damage.

Causing less wear

When coins are is a coin album, the coin can spin on its axis which will wear down the obverse and the reverse. The obverse will be worn down if the opposite flap touched the face of the coins as it is likely to do. Additionally, if you have an album which is at all loose for the coins they will spin at best and pop out completely if you are unlucky. In a coin slab, there is no way for the coin to spin as they are locked into place. The only time the coin will move is if you open the coin slab and take it out.

Having access to inspect the coin

If you ever plan to sell the coins in the coin album you will be in trouble. This is because of the amount of work you will have to go through to get the coins out of the album. When your coins are in a coin slab, you will have great protection for your coins without having to take them out so they can be looked at closer. They will simply look right through the plastic to the coin inside and they will be the judge of whether it is worth your asking price or not.

Must Have Supplies for Collecting Rare Coins

There are many different hobbies that you can take on. One of the hobbies that you can enjoy which can turn into a profession if you want it to is collecting rare coins. These are expensive to buy, but a lot of fun to learn about. After all, there is always a story which goes along with what makes the coin so rare. There is often something involving government corruption or a war in the country or a need to recall the money. While the stories may change, the excitement of collecting these coins does not abate.

Whenever you want to collect rare coins, there are a few things that you will need to make sure that you have. Among the things that you will need to have are basic supplies. These will help you to make sure that every new addition to your collection will be protected as you store it. You will need to learn about the kinds of things that you should have in your supplies, where to buy them and how to make sure that your coins are getting graded properly. This will help you to have the kind of collection worth showing off.

Basic Supplies to Buy

One of the first things that you will need to buy when looking to collect rare coins is a good pair of white cotton gloves. The tighter the weave on the gloves, the better off you will be. You do not want to put any lint on the coins. You also do not want to get any of the oils from your hands on the coins. It is important to also make sure that you have plastic slides that you can put the coins in. Have a pair of rubber tipped tweezers to handle especially delicate pieces.

Where to Buy Supplies

Luckily, there are many different places that you can buy supplies whenever you are collecting rare coins. You can buy these on the internet very easily through a few different coin collecting sites as well as through mass retailers. You can also buy everything that you will need through the different coin shops which might be in your area. It is not advisable to buy just any supplies that you can find at the local hardware store as they will not be made with your intentions in mind.

Getting Your Coins Graded

A very important part of collecting rare coins is that you will need to get them graded. This is important because only then will you have a chance at making sure that you will be able to sell them later. Even if you do not plan on selling them, you will need this so that you will be able to know exactly what you have and how much your collection is worth. You will be able to find professional coin graders like PCGS and NGC. Make sure that you do not allow some small grader handle this as it will not be recognized and could even make the grading fraudulent.

Top 3 Places to Store a Rare Coins Collection

When people collect anything of value one of the things they need to know is how and where to store the valued items of their collections. This is true for anyone who has a rare coins collection. When it comes to rare coins the best places to store them directly correlates with the value of the coins on the collection. Below is information about three of the best places to store a rare coins collection bases on their value.

Out of Sight

If you have a rare coins collection which has more sentimental value than monetary value the best place to store your collection is inside of you home. You will first want to obtain PVC flips for any raw coins you ion your collection. (Flips containing PVC can damage raw coins.)The next thing you will want to do is obtain a coin collecting box. You can then organize the coins in any manner you choose inside the box.

After you have the storage items you need then you will want to place both your encased and raw coins in flips inside the box. Take the box and store it in a place in your home where you have easy access to it but others do not. The ideal place to store a coin collection on your home is in an area which is out of sight of others. This will reduce the chances of others being tempted to go through your collection and possibly damaging any items in it.

Home Safe

A rare coins collection which has coins in them which have a high monetary value can be stored at home. If you choose to store your valuable coins at home you will want to obtain a home safe. You will want to get your safe from a reputable home safe dealer. Safe dealers will be able to guide you through the many different types of safes which are available in the market. They can also help make recommendations to you for which are the best to suit your specific storage needs.

The safe you install in your home should be bolted down to the floor or it should be cemented in. Both the methods of bolting and cementing safes keep them from being easily lifted up carried off by thieves. Keep in mind that when you make the investment into your safe and tits installation you are investing in your coin collect and your peace of mind.

Safe Away from Home

Those who have rare coins collections of which have extreme monetary value usually choose the option to not store their collections inside their home. The method of storage most trusted by high end coin collectors is a safe deposit box at their bank.

Storing your coins inside a safe deposit box not only protects your coin collection from more than just theft. This method of storage also protects your rare coin collection from unnecessary damage. This is because you handle safe deposit stored coins far less than you so those which are stored in your home.

4 Ways to Ruin a Coin Collection

It can be easy to list off all of the different things that you need to do to protect your coin collection. People are used to thinking about keeping their coins clean and stowing away their collection. These individuals often fail to think about all of the different things that they could be doing that is ruining or diminishing their coin collection.

These various actions are not going to completely ruin the coin collection. With that being said, they are not going to help you to keep your collection in the best condition possible. Be sure to avoid these four different actions if you want to get the most out of your coin collection.

Throw Your Coins Around

One of the best ways for you to physically ruin your coin collection is to throw our coins around without a care. This means shoving all of your coins into a box without thinking about cases for your most valuable coins. This also means simply not caring for your coins, including general cleaning and protecting. You may be surprised to see how much damage can be done to a coin by simply throwing it around and not keeping it somewhat protected from other coins and the elements in general.

Fail to Document Purchases and Purchase Price

It is important for you to completely document each coin that you purchase with as much information on the coin as possible, including the price that you actually purchased the coin for. You want to know exactly how much money you have pumped into your collection and exactly what coins you have in your collection. You can easily ruin your collection if you fail to keep track of what you own.

Paying Too Much for One Coin

One great way to ruin your whole coin collection is to pay too much money for one coin in your collection. You will not be able to spend that money on advancing your coin collection, as you have spent a wealth on one coin. You should be working to get as much as possible out of your collection.

Not Passing It Down

The final way for you to ruin your coin collection is not pass down your coin collecting ways to younger generations. Eventually, you are going to want to pass down your collection to keep the collection going. If you fail to do so, your collection is ruined once you are no longer able to collect the coins yourself.

Some of these different tips may seem to only require general common sense, while others may take you by surprise. This highlights the importance of looking at your collection in as many different lights as possible. Think about all of the different things that you could be doing wrong with your collection and what you need to do to correct those actions. IT will help you to take care of your collection and to show off the best collection possible.
