January 30th, 2012 — Coin Grades, Coins, Old Coins
The Professional Coin Grading Service, or PCGS, is one the three professional coin grading companies, or “slabbers”, recognized by serious coin collectors and dealers across the United States. PCGS uses the American coin grading system to give coins a grade which refers to their condition. Expert in the coin industry trust and rely ion the grade given to a coin by the PCGA to help determine the overall value and collectible status of a given rare coin. Below is more information about PCGS coins.
About PCGS
PCGS coins are respected in the coin collecting industry because PCGS is one of the top three reputable coin grading services in the United States. PCGS has been grading coins since 1986. To date the service has graded upwards of 20 billion coins. The reason so many people have come to have their coins graded by them because they have a board which consist of the best experts in numismatics which is the study of currency. This means the coins they grade receive the most accurate grading possible.
The Grading System
The Sheldon Grading System is the system used to grade PCGS coins. This system is used primarily here in the United States and is considered to be one of the best, if not the best coin grading system in the world. The system consists of 70 points used to grade a coin on its overall condition. The higher the grade number the better condition the coin is in. This is because the first 59 points of this system are given to coins which have been circulation. Points 60-70 of this system are used to grade coins which are in mint status. Each of these grades is given to a coin along with a corresponding code.
Sonic Sealing
After a coin has been graded by PCGS it is then sonically sealed in a case. When a PCGS coin is sonically sealed it also has the grade given to it and the official seal of the PCGS encase on the sealing. All of this is done so that no one can open the seal which the coin is encased in and to remove it and replace it with another coin. This is also done so no one can remove and tamper with the official grade given to that coin by the PCGS. This helps to prevent some of the fraud which often can happen within the coin collecting industry.
Knowing Your Coins Value
When one has a PCGA coin they know what they real monetary value if the coin is. This is because appraisers use the same Sheldon Grading System used by the PCGS to rate the condition of coins to help determine the value of a coin. One can go to a coin appraisal guide such as the Red Book for coins which is published annually and use the grade given to their coin by the PCGA to look up the value of their coin. All a collector needs to do is simply match the type of coin they have the grade of the coin to the listing in the book.

Those who view your coins will appreciate it and will have a better understanding of the complexity of your collection.
Avoid Harsh Light

Stop Movement
If you are trying to display your coins you need to make sure that they are protected from, of all things, each other. It will help you to show off their beauty and their rarity without compromising the coin itself. you will be able to keep your most important coins safe and sound while showing others the coins that you have collected.
If you have a coin collection of old coins, do not hide it away in a box or in a location where no one can see it. Work on a careful display to show the world the beauty of the old money that you collect.

December 25th, 2011 — Coins, Identifying Coins, Old Coins
Whether you have years of experience and thousands of coins or have just entered the hobby of coin collecting, it is likely that you have or will soon come across a few mysterious old coins in your collection. Mystery coins are typically old coins that you cannot identify easily; they can be difficult to identify and sort if you do not know where they are from, what they are called, or how old they are. This guide will provide you with information and tips to help you start identifying your old coins.
There are many ways to approach this process. First of all, if you can verify that the coin originated from a mint in the United States, you can purchase or borrow a copy of the “Red Book
“, which contains listings of coins that you can review and compare to your old mystery coins. Coins from the United States are required to have the words “United States of America” written somewhere on their faces. However, on exceptionally old U.S. coins, the words may be abbreviated.
There is also the possibility that your coins may not originate from the United States. In such cases, if you do not find the words “United States” on the coin, you will most likely find the name of a different country on the coin. Typically, you will be able to figure out the country the coin originates from by examining the markings on the coin. However, it is likely that the name of the country the coin originated from will be written in the foreign language of that country.
Even if you cannot determine where the foreign coin originates from by reading the words on the currency, you may also be able to type the writing into a search engine online to see if other people have come across similar coins. Thousands of websites exist online to help people identify any kind of coin ever produced.
If you cannot find or read the name of a country on the old coin, a site you can consult is Don’s World Coin Gallery. On that site, you can find pictures of more than 25,000 coins from more than 400 current and past countries. You can also find a vast amount of information on the site about world coins overall.
It is also possible that you will not be able to identify some of your old coins through any of the aforementioned methods. In such cases, you may have some sort of pattern, round, or token, which will not necessarily be a coin but will resemble one. What you can try at this point is to type any inscriptions or writing you find into your search engine.
A final and important point to keep in mind when trying to identify old coins is that if you come across an old coin without either a name of a country or a denomination (which tells you the monetary value of the coin), it is likely that the coin was not officially issued by a national mint from an official government. These are known as unofficial coins, and it can be challenging to find accurate information on unofficial coins, as they tend not to be collected by most coin collectors. Because they are not collected, they are typically not worth a lot of money.

December 21st, 2011 — Mint Sets, Old Coins
There are some individuals who are going to collect nothing but old money, completely ignoring any of the money that is currently in circulation. There are others who focus solely on the money that is readily available, planning for a future collection. There are merits to both sides of collecting, with many bridging the gap and collecting both types of money. It is important for all collectors to take a look at both collecting old money and collecting new money. Those who look into the pros and cons of both sides of this coin collection will see how they should make both a regular part of their collection-growing efforts.
Old money has consistently been the type of money that individuals collect. People are constantly looking for old money because it is not minted anymore, making it somewhat rare. There are some old money pieces that are more rare than others, making coin collecting somewhat interesting. People like the idea of trying to find rare coins, and get excited when they finally manage to bring it to their collection.
Coin collection in terms of old money can be incredibly difficult and expensive, however, creating the one major drawback of this style of collecting. Those who focus on nothing but old money will find high prices for the coins that they are interested in. This is the type of coin collecting meant for those who have larger sums of money.
New money is always going to be an interesting way to collect coins and paper money, as it is readily available. This type of collecting is perfect for those who do not have a lot of money, as it still allows them to create a collection that may have future value. This is generally where foreign currency comes into play – people generally collect money from any foreign trips or vacations that they have taken. This collection has special meaning and may one day have actual value.
This is the large and glaring problem that those who only collect new money have with their future collection. While some of these pieces will eventually have value, most will be somewhat worthless in terms of value by coin collectors. If you are going to collect new money you should realize that the collection is more about personal value than it is about possible future value.
Those who are focused on immediate wealth and the thrill of having something rare are going to want to focus in on collecting old money. Those who want to have an easier time collecting, holding pieces that will eventually be sought after, should focus on new money. This is why it is important for many collectors to focus on both old money and new money. Whether it is foreign currency or US Currency, both old and new can come together to help create the perfect collection.

December 2nd, 2011 — Canadian Coins, Coins, Old Coins
Numismatists enjoy getting to know the history of any coins. This is why those interested in collecting Canadian coins are interested in getting the oldest coins possible as well as the rarest. As the history of the old Canadian coins is looked into, many are shocked to find out that there are not very many old coins which are available throughout the history of Canada. This has less to do with the period when the country was founded and has more to do with the amount of control the British had over the country itself.
When looking into old Canadian coins you are going to find that there are no coins which are created prior to 1902. This is because before that time the coins which were created for Canada started in 1858 by the British. Even before that, the coins which were used throughout Canada were coins which were developed in other countries and were used as legal tender by those who lived in Canada. Looking at the history of the Royal Canadian mint, it is easy to see why the collecting of Canadian coins is still relatively new.
The Early Years of Canadian Currency
In the early years of Canada, the currency used was nothing more than the currency of all the countries which had influence or trade in the country. There are no old Canadian coins from this time period because they were not even being produced. It was not even until 1841 that the Currency Act was passed which made it legal to use certain kinds of tender including American coins and British Coins. It was not until the late 1800s that the Country even got its own currency.
The First Canadian Currency
In July of 1858 two different designs were presented to the crown to have a coin printed. The first design was rejected because it looked too much like the French Bronze coins which included the Emperor Napoleon III. The second design was submitted by Leonard Charles Wyon and included the image of the queen with her hair in a bun with a tiara and a ribbon. This became one of the first old Canadian coins to be used by the country and a highly valued coin for its rarity. Still this coin was produced in England rather than in Canada.
The First Canadian Mint
It was not until 1901 that Canada was allowed to have its own mint. Thus, it was not until 1902 when the first coins were produced. All of the coins which have been produced since then have included the images of British Royalty or of the wildlife and natural aspects of Canada. These old Canadian Coins have a decent amount of value because they are rare. Among the rarest is the 1911 Canadian Silver Dollar which was last sold at auction for about $1 million and only one copy is known to exist.

June 24th, 2011 — Coins, Old Coins, Silver Coins, Small Coins, US Coins
When most Americans think about an old coin made by the United States mints they do not think of two and three cent face value coins. This is because the U.S. has not made coins with these face values for several years now. Below is some information about three of the most popular two and three cent old coins which are collected today.
This old coin was made from 1864 to 1873. Each year the coin was minted in the amount produced was diminished. This is mainly due to the fact that the coins were not as popular as they were first hoped to be. What this means for collectors is that while there are smaller quantities of these coins to be found than other U. S. collectible coins, the ones which are found are generally in really good condition.
The size of this old coin is just under than of the modern U.S. quarter. It was the first coin to have the motto “In God We Trust” printed on it. The motto is printed on the obverse of this coin on a ribbon which covers a shield. There is an olive branch and two arrows shown behind the shield on the obverse of the coins. On the Reverse of coin the words “United States of America” is printed around the edge and side those words is a wreath. Inside the wreath the words “Two Cents” are printed.
Three Cent Silver Coin
Many old coin collectors enjoy collection the three cent silver piece. These coins were made in an effort to have an easy coin to handle due to the postage rate decreasing from 5 cents to 3 cents. These coins were not popular and so in 1854 the amount of silver they were made from increased to 90% and its size was reduced in hopes that this would increase their circulation.
The U. S. three cent silver coin has a six sided star with a shield in the middle of it on the obverse. The Roman numeral three is featured on the reverse of the coin. The numerals which indicate the date the coins were made in various sizes from one year to the next. These coins which were made 1860-1863 have the smallest sized date numeral on any U.S. coin in existence.
Three Cent Nickel
After increasing the amount of silver in the U.S. Three Cent Silver did not work to increase the circulation of the coin the government switched to making these coins out of nickel in 1865. The switch to nickel was made in an effort to produce this old coin in a more cost effective way. These coins were only minted at the Philadelphia mint until 1889 when they were no longer minted.
The obverse of the Three Cent Nickel has the profile portrait of Liberty on the obverse. On the reverse of this coin is the Roman numeral three. Three cent pieces are the only United States coins to not have their value amount printed on them in English words.
