Severely Damaged Goods
There are some individuals who will purchase severely damaged old money because they want to see it in their collection. These pieces are going to be less expensive than pristine, mint-condition pieces. These pieces have low values, however, and may not be able to be resold. Interest in damaged pieces continues to wane. If you are worried about the value of your collection, avoid severely damaged coins and paper money bills.

December 25th, 2011 — Coins, Identifying Coins, Old Coins
Whether you have years of experience and thousands of coins or have just entered the hobby of coin collecting, it is likely that you have or will soon come across a few mysterious old coins in your collection. Mystery coins are typically old coins that you cannot identify easily; they can be difficult to identify and sort if you do not know where they are from, what they are called, or how old they are. This guide will provide you with information and tips to help you start identifying your old coins.
There are many ways to approach this process. First of all, if you can verify that the coin originated from a mint in the United States, you can purchase or borrow a copy of the “Red Book
“, which contains listings of coins that you can review and compare to your old mystery coins. Coins from the United States are required to have the words “United States of America” written somewhere on their faces. However, on exceptionally old U.S. coins, the words may be abbreviated.
There is also the possibility that your coins may not originate from the United States. In such cases, if you do not find the words “United States” on the coin, you will most likely find the name of a different country on the coin. Typically, you will be able to figure out the country the coin originates from by examining the markings on the coin. However, it is likely that the name of the country the coin originated from will be written in the foreign language of that country.
Even if you cannot determine where the foreign coin originates from by reading the words on the currency, you may also be able to type the writing into a search engine online to see if other people have come across similar coins. Thousands of websites exist online to help people identify any kind of coin ever produced.
If you cannot find or read the name of a country on the old coin, a site you can consult is Don’s World Coin Gallery. On that site, you can find pictures of more than 25,000 coins from more than 400 current and past countries. You can also find a vast amount of information on the site about world coins overall.
It is also possible that you will not be able to identify some of your old coins through any of the aforementioned methods. In such cases, you may have some sort of pattern, round, or token, which will not necessarily be a coin but will resemble one. What you can try at this point is to type any inscriptions or writing you find into your search engine.
A final and important point to keep in mind when trying to identify old coins is that if you come across an old coin without either a name of a country or a denomination (which tells you the monetary value of the coin), it is likely that the coin was not officially issued by a national mint from an official government. These are known as unofficial coins, and it can be challenging to find accurate information on unofficial coins, as they tend not to be collected by most coin collectors. Because they are not collected, they are typically not worth a lot of money.

Just like every other industry, the coin collecting industry has gone high tech. You can buy and sell coins online. You can also use software to grade and keep track of the value of your collection. There are those out there who are resistant to these changes. They prefer the solid feel of a coin book in their hand as they go through the process of looking up vital information about new purchases or potential purchases. What they do not realize is there are some significant advantages you will get by using coin software in place of or in addition to the books.
The advantages you will get by using coin software will help you to streamline your approach to purchasing and selling coins. This will help you to be a better collector. For those not looking to be as serious, it will help you to get the right grades for all of your coins without having to send them to a third party grading service. This is also a great way for you to keep track of the value of your coins without having to read all of the market reports or coin trading guides constantly.
Streamlining Sales and Purchases
When you use coin software, you will be able to keep a list of your coins which is available for those you want. They will be able to see the coins that you have available and make offers on the ones that they would like to buy from you. Having a compiled list will also allow you to buy the coins you need to fill the gaps in your list. This is a great alternative to always having to keep a running mental tally of what you have on hand and what you need for your collection.
Help Grading Your Coins
Those just getting started with coin collecting will be able to get a lot of benefits from coin software. This is because you will not have to go through the pesky details of what makes a coin go from one grade to the next. In many cases you will be able to scan a picture of your coin and the software will do the rest. It will look for any of the characteristics which will change the value from one grade to the next. The software will be able to then tell you what the grade of the coin is. This will help to save you a lot of grading costs.
Track the Value of Your Coins
Once you know what the grade of your coin is, the majority of people will study the market. They will learn everything which is going on so that they will be able to always know the best estimated value of their coins. This is something the coin software can do for you. It will keep up with the market standards so that you will be able to simply look at the information on the screen and know where you stand whether out of curiosity or if you are looking to sell.

April 13th, 2011 — Coin Grades, Coins, Identifying Coins, Rare Coins, Valuable Coins
Numismatics are constantly on the look-out for the next great coin to add to their collections. These coins can range in value from a few hundred dollars to a few million dollars. The most valuable status most coins can attain is to be rare. This can help a coin to be worth a lot of money even if it is not in Mint State. Of course, just because you know that the coin is rare, you may not be aware of how much the coin is worth. Determining the value of rare coins is easy once you know what to look for.
There are a few different things you will need to look for when you are determining value of rare coins. By looking at these different factors, you will be able to determine exactly how much the coin is worth and how much you will be able to get for the coin should you end up selling it. Always make sure that you know just how rare the coin is. Make sure that you know what grade your coin is. Also, you should make sure that you know what the coin has recently been traded at.
The Rarity of the Coin
There are a few different ways in which you can determine how rare your coin is. You can look at the number of coins which are estimated to be available currently in the marketplace. You can also rate the rarity of the coin as determined by the Sheldon Rarity Scale. This is a scale which goes from R1 for the most common coins to R8 for coins which are unique or have very few other coins which are available like them. You will rarely if ever see the R8 coins which makes them prohibitively expensive.
The Grade of the Coin
The higher the grade of the coin on the Sheldon scale, the more valuable the coin will be. The value of rare coins is known to jump dramatically from one level to the next. This is because as the coins become rarer, it is less likely that you will find one in a Mint State. In fact, the rarest of coins are known as to what level they are graded and their value is pretty well set based on where in terms of the rest of the pack they fall.
Recent Trade Values
It is always a good idea to keep an eye on the recent trades for coins. This is because you will be able to find out what the rest of the industry sets as the value of rare coins. You will be able to determine the value of your coin based on the value of other recent trades. Either a good story for your coin or the fact that your coin is a different grade will factor into making it where your coin is valued differently than the other coins. These are points you will likely bring up should you ever decide to sell your coin.

Coins have been used as currency for thousands of years. They have been mentioned in the bible as well as other historic texts. This is just one of the reasons why people have been collecting coins. The historical significance is enough to intrigue most people. Simply to be able to gaze on a coin which is from a completely different time period is enough to blow the minds of many people. Of course, because other people want to be able to own the coins, the coins gain value and it is not unheard of for a small coin collection worth to be valued in the millions.
This makes many collectors wonder about what their coin collection worth is. They want to make sure they have a collection which will be of great value not only to them, but also to the other collectors in the world. There are a few different things you will need to know so that you will be able to increase the value of your collection as well as to make sure that your collection does not tank in value over the years. Getting to know these things will help you to have a much better collection both now and in the future.
Never wash your coins
ON of the biggest no-no’s for many collectors is to wash coins. It is tempting to many to wash the coins so that they will look great and add to the coin collection worth. The fact is people are looking for coins that are true to their history. If they have been washed or cleaned in any way, they do not retain the same allure as they would have if they had not been tampered with. It is almost as if you washed the history off of them.
Always get your coins graded
If you are looking to find out your coin collection worth, you will need to get the coins graded. This is normally done through a third party grading service like PCGS or NCG. These companies are well known around the country for offering top notch grading services because of their high dedication to standards within the industry. They will be able to tell you exactly where in the Sheldon’s grading scale your coin is so that you will be able to know what the market values them at.
Get your coins slabbed for protection
The best way you can preserve the coin collection worth is by making sure the coins have been placed in a protective slab. Normally when you get your coins graded, they will offer to put them in a slab for you. This will help to make sure that the coin will not be damaged in any way from the time it was graded. As the coin increases on the Sheldon’s scale of rarity, your protected coin will steadily increase in value.

December 17th, 2010 — Coins, Identifying Coins
The 1804 silver dollar is worth around $10.1 million. There are about four other coins valued above $5 million. There are plenty of other coins worth millions if not hundreds of thousands. What makes them so special? How can you make sure that you are holding on to these kinds of coins for the future? While it is hard to say that the quarter in your pocket right now will ever be worth anything more than a quarter, there are plenty of other ways that you can determine whether a coin is a collectible coin or not.
There are some definite signs you should look for when you are trying to find out if you should collect a coin or not. First of all, a collectible coin will not be something that you see every day. Another way that a coin becomes instantly collectible is when it is not distributed to the public. Better still is when you find coins which come from a unique background which has caused it to be rare in the common day. Remember, the better the condition that these coins are in now, the better the chance you have that they will be worth something in the future.
Seldom Seen Coins
Something like the Wheat Penny is something which is still circulated and as such does not have any real value. When you take into consideration how often you see one of these, you will get the idea that this is something that you should hold on to when you find one. Many people will pay attention to the U.S. Mint to find out when they are pulling certain coins from circulation. They seize the opportunity to get as many of the coins as they can before they disappear.
Undistributed Coins
There are some coins which are never supposed to see the light of day. These coins may have been struck incorrectly. They may have also have been intended simply as commemorative coins. Remember that not every collectible coin will increase in value like you hope to. In fact, some of the commemorative coins actually decreased in value because they were simply not popular with the coin collecting crowd. This might have been for the art or it might simply have been that it was a recreation of another coin which was more valuable as the original.
Rare Coins
Coins can become rare because of circumstances. They can also become rare because they were not treasured by those who used them every day. Something like the Morgan Silver Dollar was despised by those who carried it every day as legal tender. Today, that same collectible coin is highly sought after because it is rare to find. Those who had them did not want them and could not wait to turn them in so that they could get the easier to carry paper currency. Remarkably, the paper currency is not nearly as valuable in the modern age of collectibles.
