There are more people than ever getting started with coin collecting. This is a hobby which young and old alike have been enjoying for quite some time. The great thing about the hobby is that it is not only a great way to learn about history and your country, it can also be quite profitable. The question many people have is how you get started collecting coins. There are a few different approaches you can take to get started. One is not necessarily right and another wrong. It is all about what interests you and what you would like to get out of your collection.
Collecting Rare Coins
The most popular method of coin collecting is to collect those coins which are rare and have a high value. These coins are found in various locations from other coin collectors to pawn shops. When you are purchasing any kinds of rare coins, it is a good idea to make sure that they have been authenticated so that you will not be buying something which only claims to be rare but is in fact a replica of a coin which is rare.
How you preserve your coins in coin collecting is up to you. While there are mats which will allow you to hold all of the coins in their own compartments, others have decided to hold on to the coins in sealed plastic bags. When you contain the coins, keep in mind the effect of oxygenation on the coins. You should also be cautioned against cleaning the coins yourself unless you have the right gear. You can actually do harm to the coin by trying to clean it. In most cases, you are better off simply leaving the coin alone. If you are insistent on having the coin cleaned, take it to an expert in the field of rare coins.
Collecting Coins of Personal Value
There are a lot of people who get into coin collecting simply to hold on to coins which bring back memories of their own lives. These coins can include the commemorative coins which have recently been released by the mint. Special mats have been created which allow people to place the coins in special slots which will signify which of the states they have traveled to in their lives. It serves as a coin collection as well as a memento of the travels you have had in your life.
Traveling is such a big part of coin collecting that you will even find people who have collections which include coins from around the world. These signify the travels that they have been on throughout the different countries. These can become quite valuable as the coins stop being circulated. Even if they are of no value during your lifetime, they can become something which is valuable for those who are further down in the family tree. You can pass along the memories of your travels as well as the value of the collection.

When you are talking you time, effort, and money to invest in coin collecting you need to be sure to only do business with reputable people and businesses in the coin industry. One of the most important things you need to know is how to go about finding the best coin dealers. Below is some helpful information to assist you in protecting your invest in coins when looking for a dealer. Follow the tips below and you are sure to find the best dealer in the coin industry here on the United States.
Avoid Basement “Slabbers”
When you are considering doing business with any rare coins dealers you need to first find out if they are associated with one of the top three recognized coin grading services or “slabbers” as they are know in the coin world. The top three coin graders in the United States are PCGS, or Professional Coin Grading Services, NGS, or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, and ICG, or Independent Coin Graders. All of these services use top currency experts called numismatic experts to grade coins. Other companies which are staffed with numismatic experts are referred to as basement slabbers. Basement slabbers generally overcharge to rate a coin and the rating they give are often inaccurate and nit recognized by coin collecting experts.
Online Dealers
One of the first places people tend to go to these days when it comes to collecting anything is the internet. While the internet can be a great source of information about collectible items such as coins it may not be the best place to find rare coin dealers. This is because many of those who sell coins online are not associated with the top three recognized U.S. coin graders. Most of the online dealers of coins use basement slabbers to determine the value of the coins they are selling. The result is that people often end up overpaying for a coin through an online dealer or they sell them a coin for far below the coins value.
Ask Questions
Before you go into any of the coin dealers you may be considering you will want to do some research about the type of rare coins you are going to look at. While you are there start by asking the dealer questions about the coins which you already know the answer to from your research. This can help you in determining if the dealer knows what they are talking about and whether or not they are trying to mislead you.
If a dealer tries to avoid your questions and seems to be trying to stop you from asking anything then they may not be a dealer you want t do business with. Remember that reputable coin dealers will encourage you to ask question about rare coins. A reputable will be happy to answer any questions their customers have because they are looking to create a long term business relationship with you instead of just trying to rush you into one quick sale.

There are many great hobbies you can get started with. One of the hobbies which seems to be gaining a lot of popularity is the hobby of coin collecting. This is for a few different reasons. For instance, you are able to discover a lot about the history of the society which created the currency just by looking at their coins. This includes everything from the shape of the coin to the images which are on the coins and the lettering. The more you know about the coins, the more you will be able to enjoy collecting coin.
There are a few things you will need to know before you purchase or sell any coins. Getting to know these simple facts will help you to make sure that you are getting coins which will be the best for your collection as well as making sure that you are paying a fair price. You will need to know the different coins which have been produced. You will also need to know the budget you have to invest in collecting coin. You will also need to understand the grading system used by the industry for all coins.
Learning the different coins
There are many different coins which are produced by the different countries every year. While the coins might change over the years, most countries will use the same face values from year to year, Generally even the look of the coins will not change over the decades. Even something like the quarters which have been created recently for the US Mint still have the familiar obverse. Only the reverse has changed. When collecting coin, it is a good idea to know what the coins look like so that you will know what you are buying.
Figuring out your budget
The budget you set for yourself will have a huge impact on what kind of coin collecting you will be able to engage in. If you have a budget of less than $100, you can still get started with a few great coins. If you only have a few dollars here and there to spare for a hobby, you can buy the coins you will collect from the Mint and purchase more exotic coins after you have saved up or after your coins from the Mint have matured into more valuable coins.
Learning the grading system
When investing in coin collecting, it is very important to get to know the Sheldon grading system. This is important so that you will understand why you are paying what you are paying for the coins you purchase. The important thing to know is that the grading scale goes from 1 for the worst to 70 for the best. The numbers from 61 – 70 indicate coins which have been uncirculated and are untouched by human hands. They are literally the best coins you can purchase. The value of a coin can jump dramatically by going up even one level on the Sheldon grading scale.

January 14th, 2012 — Coins, For Beginners, Foreign Coins, Getting Started
There are many different options which are available to you when you get started collecting coins. You can collect coins as an avid collector that has a collection which is worth hundreds of thousands. You can also be a passive collector who is in it more for the fun than you are for the value or the investment. You can also choose to collect certain kinds of coins. Collecting foreign coins is something which a lot of people enjoy doing. This is because not only is it possible to collect coins which can come from a much older mint. They have the added bonus of automatically being exotic.
Even when collecting foreign coins, there are few different ways in which you can get started collecting the coins. You can choose to collect coins which represent the places that you have traveled to. You can also collect coins which are limited pieces which are just recently released with the intention of being collector’s items. You can also search out the most valuable of the old coins that you can find so that you can enjoy a collection which is worth a lot of money. It is up to you what kind of collection you will have.
Collecting from Your Travels
Those who like to travel a lot can start a mat which will hold all of the coins from the countries that they have visited throughout their lives. These collections can be represented by world maps where the coins take the place of pushpins. If you choose to collect coins in this manner, it is a good idea to try and get coins which were just freshly minted so that you can preserve them in this pristine state. Make sure that you get them into slabs as quickly as possible to avoid any other problems.
Collecting Foreign Commemorative Coins
The United States of America does not hold the sole rights to create and distribute commemorative coins. You can choose to collect foreign coins based on the limited production which the government intended. While the coins will only have the value that you purchased it right away, as long as they have been intentionally limited in number, it will be within your lifetime that you will be able to see the coins go up in value. Since these come in sets, either buy the whole set or buy the case which you can add coins to later.
Collecting Rare and Valuable Coins
Foreign nations are for the most part older than the United States. This means when you choose to collect foreign coins that you will get the opportunity to collect coins which will likely have a much higher value than the domestic coins you will be able to find. Be careful when purchasing these coins that you can trust that they are not fakes. Either only buy from reliable sources, or have all coins appraised when you purchase them. This way you will not be stuck with a coin that has no real value.

January 4th, 2012 — Coins, For Beginners, Getting Started, Storage and Supplies
There are many different ways you can save your coins that you collect. There are some methods which are better than others for protecting your coins. One of the ways you can protect your coins is through the use of the coin collection album. This is an album which some coin collectors use so that they will be able to look at certain collections at any given time. While these are generally used to collect the modern coins being issued by the mint, there are many which have been created which help you to store older coins as well.
It is important that before getting started with using a coin collection album that you know all there is to know about it. You should know all of the good qualities about putting your valuable coins in such a place. You should also get to know what cons there are about using an album to store your coins in. Additionally, it is a good idea to get to know the other ways you can store your coins. The more you know about the different ways to store your coins, the better decisions you can make about how you would like to store your coins.
Pros of the album
The first thing you should look at when considering whether to use a coin collection album is all the ways you will benefit from it. The biggest way you will benefit from it is the fact the album will have been made specifically to house your coins. The slots for each coin have been specially designed so that when you put the coin in the album, it will stay exactly where you put it. This will keep you or anyone else from touching the coin again.
Cons of the album
The biggest problem with the coin collection album lies in the construction. They are generally made from cardboard. This means the coin can be scratched when you place it into the album. Additionally, when you place the coin into the slot, you will likely do so with your bare hand. This will render the coin unable to be graded as a mint state coin. The oils from your skin will make it where the coin will have an indelible mark which will rate it at lower than a MS 61.
Alternatives to the Album
If you have decided you do not want to use the coin collection album, you will need to have an alternative to put your coins into. This is because you will need to offer protection to your coins. A great way you will be able to get protection for your coins is to use flips, cases and slabs. The most used for of protection is the slab. This is because the hard plastic shell will suspend the coin in place and will allow you to inspect the coin without ever having to take it out of the case.

Others will tell you there is no point in collecting unless you are able to get mint quality coins. Once again, the kind of dollar coin collection you have will depend on your budget and why you are collecting in the first place. This will help you to make sure you are getting exactly what you are looking for.
Collections with a Morgan Dollar
The Morgan Dollar is fairly easy to come by and you can get it for a decent price. The reason why the Morgan Dollar is important to a collection is because of the fact it is becoming rarer as the years go by. It used to be the coin was used in everyday transactions. The problem was that in the time it was used, it was heavy to carry around a bunch of coins for spending currency. Many turned in the Morgan Dollars to get lighter paper currency almost as soon as it was made available in the banks.
Collecting Mint State Coins
The state of any coin will increase or decrease the value of the coin. This is why many will say there is no reason to have a dollar coin collection unless you can use all mint state coins. The problem is that as the coins become rarer, it becomes almost impossible to be able to get a coin in mint state. If you are collecting dollars which include the modern coins, it is recommended you make sure you not only have them graded but that you have them put in a protective slab to keep them in a mint state.
A Collection for Any Budget
As mentioned above, it is possible to buy coins in all different states. This means it is possible for you to get coins of little value over the face value. You can also start a collection with nothing but the coins which are being produced right now. As long as you make sure to protect them from being scratched or damaged, there is a good likelihood the coin will increase in value within your lifetime. If nothing else, you will be able to remember when you got the coin.

There are many different reasons why people have taken to collecting coins over the years. There have been those who have enjoyed collecting coins because they like the way that they look. There are also those who have collected coins so that they can make a sound financial investment. Whether you are someone looking to get started for pleasure or profit, there are a few things you should know so that you can get started the right way.
Among the most important things you can have include the supplies you will need for coin collecting. The first thing you should have is for the coin collection hobby are the books and software which will detail out the different kinds of coins. You will also need to have good cases in which you can keep all of your coins so that they will remain safe. You will also need a good 10X magnifying glass so you will be able to take a good look at all of the coins you have and those you are thinking about purchasing.
Getting coin collection books and software
Identifying the coins you are buying is one of the most important things you can do. This is because your coin collection hobby will never be able to get off the ground if you do not even know what it is that you have in your collection. There are different books and software which are available you can use so that you will be able to identify coins by their appearance as well as being able to think about the different coins you would like to buy for the future.
Getting the right protective gear
Another thing you will need for your coin collection hobby is to make sure you will be able to protect your coins. While it is important you have clean white cotton gloves in case you need to handle the coins, it is a better idea to simply keep everything in a protective case at all times. The best cases are the slabs which are used by the third party grading services because you will be able to see every detail of the coin without any distortion.
Getting a good magnifying glass
The last thing you will need to get started with a coin collection hobby is a good 10X power magnifying glass. This is important because so much of what you will be looking for will be in the little details present on the different coins. When you have a good glass to look through, you will be able to see everything you need to see. This will help you to make sure that a coin is on the level before you make an offer on buying it and before you sell it to another collector.

The hobby of coin collecting often starts at a very young age. Children are fascinated by the different sizes, colors and feel of coins. If they show an interest in collecting coins, parents should encourage them to pursue the hobby. A child might start out by collecting coins from their parents pocket change and trying to get one coin from every year. Maybe they will want to group together all the different denominations for the year they were born. As they get a little older and want to focus more on their hobby, there are many ways they can add to their collection.
Grandparents who know that their grandson or granddaughter has an interest in coin collecting have a wonderful chance to give them a gift that is both educational and can possibly turn out to be a great investment. A commemorative coin set or perhaps a shiny new American Eagle silver dollar would be welcomed by the young collector. You’ll never have trouble deciding what to get your grandchild when they love collecting coins.
Adults, who may have started out collecting coins as a childhood hobby, may have stopped collecting coins after they hit their teens and started getting interested in the opposite sex or the many other activities that suddenly filled their lives. After they’ve aged a little and settled down a bit, they might want to get back into coin collecting. The reason may not be so much as a hobby to pass the time, but rather, as an investment, where they hope to someday turn a coin collection into big money.
Say for example: After your interest is sparked by finding a shoebox full of coins that had been stored away in the attic, and unseen by human eyes for nearly ten years, you decide to resume collecting coins. Now that you are serious, the first thing you’ll want to do is take stock of your old collection. You may need to get a bunch of coin holders to protect those coins, or you may find they are basically just worth the face value and not worth keeping as part of your new collection.
This brings up the need to educate yourself on coin collecting. You can pick up a book or two and learn all about coin collecting. Everything from knowing the condition of a coin to its value, should be studied. Next decide what area of coin collecting you want to pursue. Perhaps you want to collect quarters. Depending on your budget, you might start with collecting all of the 50 state quarters that were an immense hit with the coin collecting crowd. Buy the best you can afford in terms of condition. It will cost a bit more, but, in the long run, it will be worth more. It is better to buy one very good coin than to spend your money on ten very average coins.
Take a trip down to your local coin shop and talk to the owner or salesperson. Pick their brain for awhile. They are usually very knowledgeable and more than happy to set you on the right path. While there may be a few coin dealers that are unscrupulous and just looking to make a sale, as a group, most coin shop owners and coin dealers are very honest and price their inventory at fair market value. Finally, build a good relationship with the coin store owner and you will have a friend in the business that will make you a good deal the next time you come back to add to your collection.
