4 Tips for Getting Kids into Coin Collection

There are plenty of adults who get into coin collection at an older age, starting their collection when they have the money to do so. There are others who started at a younger age, collecting coins from the period they grew up in. There is something to be said for getting kids into coin collection, as it can be a great educational tool as well as a topic to bond over.

If you are thinking about getting your kids into coin collection you are going to want to make sure that you do so correctly. There are some things to consider with getting children into this collection theme. These four tips will help you to get kids into coin collection and allow them to have fun.

Get Them Started

If you are going to get your kid into coin collecting you are going to need to get them started. You will need to pay for the first few coins that they get, simply to get them interested in the collection and the act of picking out new coins. Just like any other hobby, there will be some costs associated with getting them into this form of collection.

Let Them Make Decisions

It is important for parents to realize that this is their child’s collection, not their own. Parents should be involved in the process but should still let children make their own decisions about their collection. Let them choose the types of coins that they want to buy, and let them negotiate prices down on their own. This will help to make sure that they are strong in their collecting skills as they do things on their own.

Make it Educational

While the act of coin collection does not need to become boring, it should be somewhat educational. Have your children do research on the coins they want or the coins that they have to see the history behind each coin. A simple 5 minutes of reading about a coin and the time period of that coin can teach your child a wealth of historical knowledge.

Have them Save

While you want to get your child started on their collection, you are going to want to push them to pay for their own coins down the road. Have your children save up from holiday gifts of from their allowance to purchase the coins they want.

Coin collecting
can be an educational tool for children, helping them to get into previous eras and other countries. Early coin collecting can also be a great way to get a child started in general coin collecting for their future. They will have a strong collection of coins by the time they can afford to purchase rare coins themselves. These different tips are simply going to help you to nudge them along their way and give them a strong start in the world of coin collecting.

Tips to Get Started with Coin Collecting

There are more people than ever getting started with coin collecting. This is a hobby which young and old alike have been enjoying for quite some time. The great thing about the hobby is that it is not only a great way to learn about history and your country, it can also be quite profitable. The question many people have is how you get started collecting coins. There are a few different approaches you can take to get started. One is not necessarily right and another wrong. It is all about what interests you and what you would like to get out of your collection.

Collecting Rare Coins

The most popular method of coin collecting is to collect those coins which are rare and have a high value. These coins are found in various locations from other coin collectors to pawn shops. When you are purchasing any kinds of rare coins, it is a good idea to make sure that they have been authenticated so that you will not be buying something which only claims to be rare but is in fact a replica of a coin which is rare.

How you preserve your coins in coin collecting is up to you. While there are mats which will allow you to hold all of the coins in their own compartments, others have decided to hold on to the coins in sealed plastic bags. When you contain the coins, keep in mind the effect of oxygenation on the coins. You should also be cautioned against cleaning the coins yourself unless you have the right gear. You can actually do harm to the coin by trying to clean it. In most cases, you are better off simply leaving the coin alone. If you are insistent on having the coin cleaned, take it to an expert in the field of rare coins.

Collecting Coins of Personal Value

There are a lot of people who get into coin collecting simply to hold on to coins which bring back memories of their own lives. These coins can include the commemorative coins which have recently been released by the mint. Special mats have been created which allow people to place the coins in special slots which will signify which of the states they have traveled to in their lives. It serves as a coin collection as well as a memento of the travels you have had in your life.

Traveling is such a big part of coin collecting that you will even find people who have collections which include coins from around the world. These signify the travels that they have been on throughout the different countries. These can become quite valuable as the coins stop being circulated. Even if they are of no value during your lifetime, they can become something which is valuable for those who are further down in the family tree. You can pass along the memories of your travels as well as the value of the collection.

How to Choose Your Foreign Currency for Collecting

Foreign currency is an incredible market for those who are serious about coin collecting and collecting paper money. Simply put, foreign currency is often more intricate and more interesting than currency here in the United States. It offers a glimpse into a world with much more history than the United States, and often features more art and more colors than money in the States.

If you are thinking about collecting foreign currency you will want to make sure that you have a game plan. Knowing how to choose your foreign currency for coin collecting and paper money collecting will help you to have the strongest collection possible.

Chose a Broad Starting Theme

The first thing that you are going to want to do when starting a collection of foreign currency is to start a general and broad theme. You may want to choose to pick coins fro ma certain time period around the world, or may want to focus in on any currency that has been produced by one country. You can easily move away from this theme later in your collection; it simply gives you a starting point and focus to make the beginning stages of collection easier to handle.

Go Off Of Looks

One of the first coins or pieces of paper that you are going to choose should be a piece that is based completely off of looks. You want to find a piece that is going to capture your attention, make you interested in foreign currency, and hold your interest for future pieces. Even if the piece is not worth much and is something that nearly everyone can find with ease, collect it. It will start the spark that could continue on your love for foreign currency collecting.

Research

Once you have started off your collection, dive deeper into foreign currency through research. You will want to look at coin collecting or paper money collecting and understand interesting coins and pieces that may be hard to find. You will also want to know how to identify counterfeits that you may not have otherwise recognized.

Expand

Finally, you are going to want to expand your foreign currency collection beyond your original theme. Once you have started to collect the currency for one theme, you want to go beyond it. Sticking with one solid theme for too long may cause you to lose interest or may keep you from currency pieces that will make you happy. In the end, you will want to collect as many pieces as you can regardless of a theme.

It is important for you to start small and to consistently grow your foreign currency collection. The slow start will help you to become more familiar with the market and the currency itself. You can then expand your collection to collect all of the different things that are going to make you happy with your actual collection. Utilize these tips to simply make your foreign currency collection as impressive, interesting, and intriguing as possible.

How to Find the Best Rare Coins Dealers in the U.S.

When you are talking you time, effort, and money to invest in coin collecting you need to be sure to only do business with reputable people and businesses in the coin industry. One of the most important things you need to know is how to go about finding the best coin dealers. Below is some helpful information to assist you in protecting your invest in coins when looking for a dealer. Follow the tips below and you are sure to find the best dealer in the coin industry here on the United States.

Avoid Basement “Slabbers”

When you are considering doing business with any rare coins dealers you need to first find out if they are associated with one of the top three recognized coin grading services or “slabbers” as they are know in the coin world. The top three coin graders in the United States are PCGS, or Professional Coin Grading Services, NGS, or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, and ICG, or Independent Coin Graders. All of these services use top currency experts called numismatic experts to grade coins. Other companies which are staffed with numismatic experts are referred to as basement slabbers. Basement slabbers generally overcharge to rate a coin and the rating they give are often inaccurate and nit recognized by coin collecting experts.

Online Dealers

One of the first places people tend to go to these days when it comes to collecting anything is the internet. While the internet can be a great source of information about collectible items such as coins it may not be the best place to find rare coin dealers. This is because many of those who sell coins online are not associated with the top three recognized U.S. coin graders. Most of the online dealers of coins use basement slabbers to determine the value of the coins they are selling. The result is that people often end up overpaying for a coin through an online dealer or they sell them a coin for far below the coins value.

Ask Questions

Before you go into any of the coin dealers you may be considering you will want to do some research about the type of rare coins you are going to look at. While you are there start by asking the dealer questions about the coins which you already know the answer to from your research. This can help you in determining if the dealer knows what they are talking about and whether or not they are trying to mislead you.

If a dealer tries to avoid your questions and seems to be trying to stop you from asking anything then they may not be a dealer you want t do business with. Remember that reputable coin dealers will encourage you to ask question about rare coins. A reputable will be happy to answer any questions their customers have because they are looking to create a long term business relationship with you instead of just trying to rush you into one quick sale.

A Beginner’s Guide to Collecting Coins

There are plenty of people out there looking for a great hobby they can get started in. More people have started turning to coin collecting. This is because it appeals to two different collectors. It appeals to those who simply enjoy the look of certain coins to those who see the investment value possible when you own certain coins. For those looking to get started in collecting coins, there are a few things to keep in mind. These things will help you to have the collection you want while making sure that you never pay too much.

Collecting Commemorative Coins

There are plenty of people who are seeking out the coins which are currently being produced by the U.S. Mint as a way to start collecting coins. Whether you are talking about the state quarters or the president dollar coins, these are extremely collectible. The only thing about collecting something so modern is to make sure that they are either slabbed right away or that they are put in a mat along with all of the rest of the coins which come in the collection. This will help you to change something which has only the printed value now and make it worth a lot more later on.

Getting to Know the Grading Scale

The most used grading scale is the Sheldon Grading Scale. This is a scale from 1 to 70. On this scale 1 is the worst you can possibly rate. 70 is the ultimate meaning that the coin is perfect in every sense of the word. It appears as if it was printed earlier that day. The grades 60 – 70 are the grades most sought after by those collecting coins because they are the grades which mean the coin has never even been touched by human hands.

As you go higher in the grades, you will find that the prices jump significantly. In fact, you will find that all things being equal the value of the piece can jump easily two or three times the value of the grade below it. As you might imagine, this means that the coins at the top of the grading scale are that most valuable of all. Unless you have a lot of money to get started, it is recommended you start with some grades in the circulated categories and move into almost uncirculated and finally into mint state.

Storing Your Coins

A very important thing when you start collecting coins is to make sure that you are storing them correctly. The best cases to store in are those which are plastic and do not contain any PVC. The majority of slabs sold today do not contain PVC. If the case of a coin you purchased does have PVC, it is a good idea to have the coin recertified and reslabbed right away. This will make sure that you got the investment you were hoping for. It will also help to make sure that the coins will be protected from any future problems.

3 Things You Should Know Before Collecting Coin

There are many great hobbies you can get started with. One of the hobbies which seems to be gaining a lot of popularity is the hobby of coin collecting. This is for a few different reasons. For instance, you are able to discover a lot about the history of the society which created the currency just by looking at their coins. This includes everything from the shape of the coin to the images which are on the coins and the lettering. The more you know about the coins, the more you will be able to enjoy collecting coin.

There are a few things you will need to know before you purchase or sell any coins. Getting to know these simple facts will help you to make sure that you are getting coins which will be the best for your collection as well as making sure that you are paying a fair price. You will need to know the different coins which have been produced. You will also need to know the budget you have to invest in collecting coin. You will also need to understand the grading system used by the industry for all coins.

Learning the different coins

There are many different coins which are produced by the different countries every year. While the coins might change over the years, most countries will use the same face values from year to year, Generally even the look of the coins will not change over the decades. Even something like the quarters which have been created recently for the US Mint still have the familiar obverse. Only the reverse has changed. When collecting coin, it is a good idea to know what the coins look like so that you will know what you are buying.

Figuring out your budget

The budget you set for yourself will have a huge impact on what kind of coin collecting you will be able to engage in. If you have a budget of less than $100, you can still get started with a few great coins. If you only have a few dollars here and there to spare for a hobby, you can buy the coins you will collect from the Mint and purchase more exotic coins after you have saved up or after your coins from the Mint have matured into more valuable coins.

Learning the grading system

When investing in coin collecting, it is very important to get to know the Sheldon grading system. This is important so that you will understand why you are paying what you are paying for the coins you purchase. The important thing to know is that the grading scale goes from 1 for the worst to 70 for the best. The numbers from 61 – 70 indicate coins which have been uncirculated and are untouched by human hands. They are literally the best coins you can purchase. The value of a coin can jump dramatically by going up even one level on the Sheldon grading scale.

Insider Tips on Coin Collecting

It can be easy to think that you have mastered coin collecting once you have pulled together a large and decent collection. When you have coins that you like in your collection and have spent years on your collection, you feel like you cannot improve your collection. With that being said, anyone who wants to become a great coin collector knows that there is always room to improve their approach to their coin collecting and their coin collection as a whole.

These insider tips are going to help you to strengthen your coin collection and will give you the knowledge you need to approach your collection with professionalism. Follow these tips to see a better collection and to have an easier time with coin collecting as a whole.

Know When to Make Your Move

If you are serious about coin collecting you need to know when to finally make a sale and purchase the coin that you are interested in. Do not purchase the coin as soon as you find it – there could be others in different collections and shops that are at lower prices. You should also avoid paying top dollar for a coin, as you may be able to get a lower price. You need to understand when you should pick up the coin at any cost (incredibly rare coins) or when to let the coin go (coins you will see at other shops, guaranteed).

Always Negotiate

The earlier mention of not paying top dollar for coins brings up the point of negotiation. You should always work to negotiate down the price of a coin. Most coin collectors are going to inflate the prices of their coin collection. They expect those who are serious about coin collecting to negotiate to work the price down, so they inflate the initial price to eventually get the price that they want for the coin. If you do not negotiate down the price, you will be paying too much for the coin.

Be Armed with Knowledge

Part of knowing when to let a coin go and knowing when to purchase a coin up comes from an overall knowledge of coin collecting. You need to understand the history behind coins, understand their rarity, and understand both expected value and going rate for them. Your knowledge will help you to understand if a coin is rare enough to pay a higher price for, or if it is priced too high to consider when taking into consideration the actual going rate of the coin. Without this knowledge, you are simply shooting in the dark as far as coin collecting is concerned.

There is a world of tips and tricks to coin collecting that will make it easier for you to improve your collection. These simple tips are the basic tips that you need to have under your belt to start to approach your collection professionally. When you know when to make a move, know how to negotiate, and know your coins, you will have a better collection and will be taken more seriously in the coin collecting world.

3 Ways to Get Started Collecting Foreign Coins

There are many different options which are available to you when you get started collecting coins. You can collect coins as an avid collector that has a collection which is worth hundreds of thousands. You can also be a passive collector who is in it more for the fun than you are for the value or the investment. You can also choose to collect certain kinds of coins. Collecting foreign coins is something which a lot of people enjoy doing. This is because not only is it possible to collect coins which can come from a much older mint. They have the added bonus of automatically being exotic.

Even when collecting foreign coins, there are few different ways in which you can get started collecting the coins. You can choose to collect coins which represent the places that you have traveled to. You can also collect coins which are limited pieces which are just recently released with the intention of being collector’s items. You can also search out the most valuable of the old coins that you can find so that you can enjoy a collection which is worth a lot of money. It is up to you what kind of collection you will have.

Collecting from Your Travels

Those who like to travel a lot can start a mat which will hold all of the coins from the countries that they have visited throughout their lives. These collections can be represented by world maps where the coins take the place of pushpins. If you choose to collect coins in this manner, it is a good idea to try and get coins which were just freshly minted so that you can preserve them in this pristine state. Make sure that you get them into slabs as quickly as possible to avoid any other problems.

Collecting Foreign Commemorative Coins

The United States of America does not hold the sole rights to create and distribute commemorative coins. You can choose to collect foreign coins based on the limited production which the government intended. While the coins will only have the value that you purchased it right away, as long as they have been intentionally limited in number, it will be within your lifetime that you will be able to see the coins go up in value. Since these come in sets, either buy the whole set or buy the case which you can add coins to later.

Collecting Rare and Valuable Coins

Foreign nations are for the most part older than the United States. This means when you choose to collect foreign coins that you will get the opportunity to collect coins which will likely have a much higher value than the domestic coins you will be able to find. Be careful when purchasing these coins that you can trust that they are not fakes. Either only buy from reliable sources, or have all coins appraised when you purchase them. This way you will not be stuck with a coin that has no real value.

A Beginner’s Guide to Grading Coins

One of the many ways you will be able to find out the value of your coins is by finding out what grade they are. In the eyes of many, grading coins is an art. While this may be true when it comes down to figuring out between two different numbers on the Sheldon Grading Scale, it is still possible to narrow down what the grade of the coin actually is. In fact, there are just a few things you will need to keep in mind when you are getting started with trying to grade your coins yourself.

The first thing you will need to do is break down the coins you have into two sections: Circulated and Uncirculated. Once this is done you can start taking a look at the imperfections and wear which are visible to the human eye. As you narrow down the grade even further you will need to have a good 10X power magnifying loop. These steps will allow you to get started on your way to grading coins. Just remember, if all else fails you can always take your coins to a third party grading service to have them weigh in on what the grades of your coins are.

The Two Main Categories

The first thing you will need to do when grading coins is to distinguish whether you have circulated or uncirculated coins. This is something you can answer simply by thinking about where you go the coin from. If you bought the coin from the mint it is uncirculated. If you got it from the bank, it will be dependent on whether they told you it was straight from the mint or not. Those you bought as raw coins or picked out of your pocket are considered circulated.

Looking with Your Eyes

The first things you will look for when grading coins are the obvious things. Look for luster which is the shine on the coin. Dull coins automatically go towards the bottom while those with a glossy shine go towards the top. You should look for any obvious marks on the coin including things like scratched or dents. If the marks are obvious they will severely affect the value of the coin and will drop it down into the lower end of the spectrum.

Looking with a Magnifying Glass

The final step in grading coins involves using a 10X power magnifying loop. You will need to look at the relief and in the plane as well as one the edges of the coin. You are looking for any imperfections. Even the slightest imperfection will knock the coin out of the top ring. Those with just a few imperfections will be able to reside near the top of the list. In terms of an uncirculated this can mean a grade of MS68 or MS 69. For those which have been circulated, it can mean a designation of an EF48 or EF49. Once again, if all else fails you can send the coin to an expert to grade it.
