Commemorative Coins: World Coins & Paper Money

Vast numbers of thematic commemorative coins are continuously being issued by a great many countries. These commemorative coins illustrate all sorts of subjects, including ancient monuments or sites, historical personalities, endangered species, and historical events. Commemorative coins may or may not commemorate a particular event. The distinction between commemorative coins and thematic coins is typically blurry or ignored.

 

The circulating and non-circulating commemorative coins are sometimes issued jointly, but with different purposes. The circulating commemorative coins introduce variation into the circulating coin mass, while the silver coins are collectors items and a source of revenue for the state. Coin collectors are often divided on relative merits of non circulating commemorative coins. Many countries issue large quantities of non circulating commemorative coins solely as a profit making venture. The events that these coins commemorate are usually chosen based on a perceived market, rather than significance to the country. Circulating coins, on the other hand, are consistently intended to showcase the culture of the country that issues them, and therefore have inherent historical interest. Advocates of commemorative non-circulating coins assert that non-circulating commemorative coins are often used to showcase the art form.
