Two Cents Coins: US Coins & Paper Money
The two cent piece is another one of James Barton Longacre’s designs for the United States Mint, resembling his other work done on the shield quarter. The coin is made of 95% copper with the metals tin and element zinc filling out the rest of the composition. It was also 23 millimeters in diameter, and weighed in at 6.221 grams. This makes the coin slightly smaller than that of the modern United States quarter. This coin is important to United States history as it is the first coin to bear “In God We Trust” on the reverse side of the coin. The first proposed motto to appear on the coin was to be “God Our Hope”, but it was changed by the United States Secretary of the Treasury at the time, Salmon P. Chase.Discount & Bargain
The coin is from an experimental time in the history of the United States when we tried to find the most logical configuration of our coins and dollars. Like a lot experiments, some were ultimately unsuccessful, such was the case with the two cent piece. Although the decimal system the two cent piece is based on, like a lot of our currency today, is logical. An exception to this rule is the quarter dollar we use today.
This is another rarity in the community of coin collectors; and another great addition. The prices shown here are reasonable and are subject to availability of the coin. The two cent pieces are magnificent in condition considering.
