Twenty Cents Coins: US Coins & Paper Money
The twenty-cent piece was another unusual denomination struck from 1875 to 1878. The coin is a very pleasing design by Christian Gobrecht, done sometime around 1836. It measured 22 millimeters in diameter and 1.55 millimeters in width and weighed in at 5 grams flat. It was made of 90% silver and 10% copper. Immediately, this coin caused confusion in the general public as it resembled in value and size to the quarter dollar. With that said, it is safe to say that it had one of the shortest circulation life spans and the shortest mintage time.Discount & Bargain
The twenty cent piece was also minted in Carson City, Nevada. This particular mint is noteworthy because it also only operated for a short time, in the years 1870-1893. This coin was taken from the public primarily because of its resemblance to the quarter. It even bore the same Liberty in a seated position design on the front and the eagle on the back, as well as feeling very similar to it. The only two glaring differences would be the small text at the bottom that stated what the coin actually was, or on the back where the quarter had a raised “LIBERTY” as opposed to a smoothed one.
This is a very rare coin indeed, as many collectors know. There is said to be less than twenty of these still around, as most of them were melted down. For the serious collector, this could quite possibly be the crown jewel to a collection.
