Each country has coins which are collectable and rare for a variety of reasons. Each coin has a story and a legacy to it which tells part of a national history of a country. This is true of collectable and rare Canadian coins. Those who enjoy Canadian coin collecting have several coins to choose form when it comes to collecting which have interesting histories and national legacies. Below are some of the most popular and sought after coins in the world of Canadian coin collecting.
Modern Collectibles
One of the more recent modern collectable coins from Canada is the final coin in the series of the 2000 Millennium Collection which is the Path of Knowledge coin. This is a legal tender $2 coin which features a polar bear with her cubs is sought after by anyone into Canadian coin collecting. The polar bear is famous for being on the $2 coins and in this version she is shown with her cubs in a scene which suggest she is teaching them about something. There have only been 40,000 of the silver version of these coins minted internationally. There are only 5,000 of the gold version of this coin.
Credit Union Coin
The sterling silver ten cent coin to celebrate the 100th anniversary of credit unions begin started in North American by Alphonse Desjardins has quickly become a coin collecting favorite. This coin features Queen Elizabeth on the obverse and the home of Alphonse Desjardins on the reverse. The reason for this coin becoming so popular to those into Canadian coin collecting is more because of the story behind the coin than the actually current value of the coin. The story behind the coin is of Desjardins recognizing that there was a need for the working class to have a rural saving bank like those who knew of in Europe. Desjardins home served as the headquarters for the first credit union in North America. The first deposit made onto the credit union was a 10 cent coin. This is what led to the historical anniversary of this act being celebrated in the form of a ten cent coin.
One Cent Piece
The Queen Victoria one cent pieces 1837-1901 have recently seen a jump in value. These coins were made of a bronze alloy consisting of mostly copper. Because the coins are made of this alloy they tarnish easily. Any of these coins which have been persevered have the red color they had when first minted and are those which have seen the greatest amount of increase in value. The coins with the younger version of Queen Elizabeth on the obverse minted from 1858 to 1859 are of the greatest value when found in excellent condition.
Fish Scales
Some refer to the Canadian Queen Victoria silver five cent pieces of 1837 to 1901 as fish scales. This is reference to the tiny size of these coins. The silver five cent pieces which were struck in 1858 and are on excellent condition are the most valuable of these coins. These coins have a profile of a young Queen Victorian on the obverse. Coins made before and after 1858 also have a value which has seen a recent increase amongst those involved in Canadian coin collecting.
