You will need to know the different coins which have been produced. You will also need to know the budget you have to invest in collecting coin. You will also need to understand the grading system used by the industry for all coins.
Learning the different coins
There are many different coins which are produced by the different countries every year. While the coins might change over the years, most countries will use the same face values from year to year, Generally even the look of the coins will not change over the decades. Even something like the quarters which have been created recently for the US Mint still have the familiar obverse. Only the reverse has changed. When collecting coin, it is a good idea to know what the coins look like so that you will know what you are buying.
Figuring out your budget
The budget you set for yourself will have a huge impact on what kind of coin collecting you will be able to engage in. If you have a budget of less than $100, you can still get started with a few great coins. If you only have a few dollars here and there to spare for a hobby, you can buy the coins you will collect from the Mint and purchase more exotic coins after you have saved up or after your coins from the Mint have matured into more valuable coins.
Learning the grading system
When investing in coin collecting, it is very important to get to know the Sheldon grading system. This is important so that you will understand why you are paying what you are paying for the coins you purchase. The important thing to know is that the grading scale goes from 1 for the worst to 70 for the best. The numbers from 61 – 70 indicate coins which have been uncirculated and are untouched by human hands. They are literally the best coins you can purchase. The value of a coin can jump dramatically by going up even one level on the Sheldon grading scale.
