Coin collectors are always on the lookout for a great deal that they can get on the coins that they want to buy. If you are in the market to sell your coins, you have an advantage. One of the advantages that you have is that you have something that they want and they have to be willing to give you what you want or you are willing to walk away with the coins that they want for their collection. When you are selling proofs, you have an even bigger advantage. This is because proofs are more valuable than regular mints.
When you are looking to sell your proofs, there are a few things you should always keep in mind. As long as you remember these things you will be able to get the get the price that you want without having to give up anything in return. The first thing to remember is that the proof you have is rare and the buyer will have to be willing to give you what you want. Second, you will need to understand that if the proof is still in its original set, it is worth even more money. Last, remember that you have a bottom line that you are willing to barter to.
Proofs Are Rare
Never act like a buyer is doing you a favor by buying your proof. You have the rare item. You are doing them a favor by giving them the chance to buy the proof. They need to act as if they are willing to do more than just show up to buy the rare proof that you have. Remember that selling coin proofs is an option. You do not HAVE to sell them the proof at all.
Sets Are Worth More
Some people will try to get you to lower the price you are asking citing that the coin is selling for much less. Remind them that a proof is much rarer than a coin. When selling coin proofs, make sure that you are selling for the price that the proof has been valued at. This is a mistake many first time sellers make. They simply look at the main line and offer to sell it for that. Always look for the proof pricing so that you get the price you want.
Set a Bottom Limit
You always have to have a bottom limit when you are selling coin proofs. Set a limit which is slight less than the market indicates is normal. Make sure that you are willing to flat out refuse to sell the proof for anything lower than your base. If they are insistent on lowering it past the low point, make sure that you start to raise the price again. If all else fails, simply walk away. In most cases this will elicit a response which will be their crack in the armor. It will allow you to get the price that you deserve.
