3 Things Important to Coin Valuation

Coin collecting is a past time which is shared by people of all ages. It has been practiced almost as quickly as people have been making coins to use as currency. While there were those who hoarded the coins to gain more wealth, there are others who collected the coins for their beauty and for their personal value. Today, the collecting of coins lives on and the value of the coins is highly subjective to the personal value the different collectors around the world place on the coins. This coin valuation helps many to decide what coins they will have in their collection or not.

The question many have is how they can understand what goes into coin valuation. There are 3 very important factors which go into being able to determine the value of a coin. Understanding these factors will help you to get a better idea of what your coin collection is worth and what you can do to make your collection more valuable. One of the first important things you should know about is the rarity of the coin. Next you should understand any history of the coin. Last, you should understand the grade of the coin.

Understanding Coin Rarity

One of the things which will make coin valuation shoot through the roof is when the coin is very rare. This is something which is tracked through different means. Some third party grading services will keep track of the rarity of coins so that they will be able to tell you not only what grade your coin is. They will be able to tell you how many of the coins there are believed to be in the world. The fewer coins which are available for purchase, the more your coin will be worth.

Understanding the History of the Coin

Another factor in coin valuation is the history of the coin itself. Some coins have a rich history including why they were created and the legends which surround why they are so rare. Such coins as the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is a coin which has a story with such things as theft, Egyptian kings and the secret service involved. It is one of the most valuable coins in the world if you were to ever legally purchase one.

Understanding the Grade of the Coin

One of the single most important factors to the coin valuation is the grade of the coin. This is because even extremely rare coins will have a difference in price if it is in good condition. Many coins will make huge leaps in the value from one level of the Sheldon’s grading scale to the next. This is why it is important you get your coins graded by an honorable third party grading service. They will be able to tell you what grade the coin actually is. This will also help you to be able to sell the coin without people questioning you about the grade.
