Part of collecting coins includes having to know the value of what a coin is worth. Getting an accurate old coin value can be difficult if you do not know where to look for it. Further more, if you so not go to the correct sources to get an old coin value you can find yourself paying too much for a coin you are looking to purchase. You could also end up getting paid too little for a coin you may be looking to sell. Below is some information about there methods you can use to determine the value of an old coin.

The Annual Red Book

Annual a book called the Red Book is published. This book contains the descriptions and values of several different coins. The only draw back to using this book is that even with in a given year the value of some coins can fluctuate greatly. You really only to rely on the Red Book to get an old coin value of you are just in need of finding out the ball park of a coin value.

Since the Red Book prices can be different then what is currently going on in the coin market you need to be cautious about how the information in the book is used. For example, you would not to buy or sell a valuable coin based solely upon what the Red Book has the coin listed for. Do some additional research before you make a serious investment in any coin.

Independent Appraisers

Some people may be looking for an old coin value for the purposes of buying or selling a coin. Others may be looking to fins the value of a coin so they can obtain insurance on a coin they have in their possession. One method of obtaining a coins value for many of these purposes is to use an independent coin appraiser.

Be sure that the coin appraiser you use is in no way associated with a shop or dealers. This is because you want their appraisal of the coin to be accurate. Truly independent coin appraisers will work independent of any coin dealers or shops.

Professional Grading Services

There are three professional grading services which are respected and recognized by coin collectors across the United States. These are PCGS, or Professional Coin Grading Service, ICG, or Independent Coin Graders, and NGC, or Numismatics Grading Corporation. All three of these services are the best in the nation you can use for obtaining an old coin value.

The professional grading serves use a grading system called the Sheldon Grading System which is considered to be on of the best coin grading systems in the world. The Sheldon system uses a scale of 70 points to grade a coin based on its condition. The grade given to the coin coupled with the type of coin it is will determine the monetary value of a coin you may be looking to buy or sell.
