Anyone who is getting into the world of coin collecting needs to know some information about proof sets and coin mint sets. This is because these types of coin sets can be very valuable in some cases. By having a basic understanding of coin mint sets you will be better prepared to examine coin sets and make proper purchases for your collection. Below are three things you should know in order of this to be possible.
What are Proof Coins?
A coin mint will proof coins of any coins it produces. The proof coins are legal render but they are made for the purpose of collection as opposed to going into circulation. Proofs are made to have the design of the coin more pronounced and clearly defined. This is why proof coins are made using a method which requires more pressure than the coins which are made for circulation. Specially polished dies are also used to make these coins.
What Coin Mint Sets Are
A coin mint will often produce set of proof coins for each type of coin it produces each year. These coin sets are sold for the intention of them to be collected and not to be put into circulation although they are legal tender. A set of proof coins will be put and sold inside a case. These sets can be purchased both from mints and from coin dealers.
For years it has been common to give dignitaries gifts of proof sets of coins produces by the country they are visiting. There are some of these sets which are available for purchase on the market. Be careful to only buy these sets and any other proof sets from a reputable coin dealer as there are many fakes some people try to pass off as being the real deal. It is also not uncommon for a legitimate proof set to be sold with a false claim of it being a gift to a dignitary as a way to inflate the price of the set.
Special Mint Sets
Proof sets or coin mint sets are not the end of the line when it comes to purchasing high quality mint condition collectors coins. During the years of 1965 to 1967 proof sets of coins were not issued. Instead the San Francisco Mint made what is referred to as Special Mint Sets. The coins in these sets have great definition and the same mirror like quality as proof set coins. The difference is that they are not made as well but they make up for that fact since they are so rare due to their short production period.
Of you are interested in collecting Special Mint Set keep in mind that some of them can be up to ten times more valuable than others which can be found. These are the sets which contain circulation strikes which have been designated as Full Bands, Deep or Cameo. Over the years several people have tried to pass off fake Special Mint Sets so it is wise to only purchase them from a reputable dealer and never from an online auction.
