3 Characteristics to Look for in Coin Shops

There are hardly any guarantees in coin collecting. While there are grading systems, slabs and certifications to be had for the coins that you buy, there is still no guarantee. This is why most people are on the search for great coin shops that they can buy from. These dealers are more trustworthy because you will be able to find a great coin at the right price. So, what do you look for in a good coin dealer?

There are actually three different things you should keep in mind when you are selecting from the many different coin shops in your area. Following these guidelines will help to keep you out of hot water. This is because you will be able to buy a better coin in the first place. You will have a better shot at not getting ripped off. Look for shops which have been around for a while. Look for those who are involved in the coin collecting community. Most importantly, look for a shop which practices a set of ethics. If you keep these in mind, you will not only find a great place to buy your coins from, you will also find a great place to sell your coins to should you ever be in the market.

A Coin Shop with Roots

The older the coin shops are, the better are your chances that you will be able to find someone who knows what they are talking about. This is because they will have had the opportunity to study the market and get to know the grades for coins. The more knowledgeable they are, the less you have to be on your toes when you are looking to buy something. They will have already have looked for anything out of the ordinary when buying the coins in the first place.

Make Sure They Have Ties

Coin shops which are tied in with the coin collecting community will be interested in preserving their reputation. If the shop already has a reputation it will be easy to find out whether that reputation is a good or a bad one. If they have ties in the community and they do not have a reputation one way or the other, it should bring up red flags. Only a shop which has been around a while will have a reputation. If they don’t, they might be brand new.

Look for Ethical Shops

Some coin shops will try to get over on those who sell coins to them. They will also try to sell coins they know to be fake or that they know to be graded at higher than what they actually are. This constitutes a big problem whether you know what you are doing yet or not. You simply cannot trust someone who is not willing to act fairly. You do not know what they will do to try to make money off of a situation. Look for a business which subscribes to the code of ethics as indicated by the PNG.
